When changing the engine over from rev1 to rev3/4 why do i need change the ECU?

When changing the engine over from rev1 to rev3/4 why do i need change the ECU?

when I can change all the engine connectors like throttle/oil pressure/knock sensor/etc from rev1 engine and still use rev1 ecu?

mechanical speedo sender too on rev1 - would that cause issues?
