Yes, that's what I was getting at. Moving to a 16 gave me more choice in a sports tyre other than a T1R, a T1R, or a T1R.

Any other suggestions? What did you buy?

Anyway, good stuff going for the 205/50, the car will have a more neutral balance. :thumleft:

It was a 1972 classic beetle, they have the engine in the rear, running a 1.8 litre twin carb 150 hp engine.. used to shift. Massive high walled 225's on the rear too, california look, slammed front, high back, turbo muffler. It was awesome.

Must have been fun with 150hp in there :thumleft:

Yokohama AD08, but you cannot get those in a 225/50/15

I wouldn't mix AD08s with anything else.

If I ever got serious power, then I guess I would budget for them.

Probably on a second set of wheels and use them for track days.

Thats basically 500 quid a set.

I got the car for £1100, and spent £500 so far on mods. Now £630. I'm trying to get a fun, reliable, well performing car for under £2000.

I'll do a build thread at some point... the transformation so far is incredible. I've really saved a scrapper.

It's only 50,000 miles rev 1 too, so was well worth saving.

My MR2 was only "stage 1" and benefitted from them, not sure why you'd only want them for high power. They're a fantastic road tyre giving superior grip and feedback compared to other "premium" brands.

If you were gonna do that you may as well go for proper semi slicks. AD08 are the king of road tyres, designed to give good grip in all weathers, grip down to -10c and be able to stack up to the occasional track days

Cheap
Reliable
Fast

I have, I just said, cheap and reliable.

A stock rev 1 turbo, even with bolt on mods (induction kit, decat, exhaust, intercooler) and 1 bar is not fast.

My GSXR is fast.

This is a daily.

I was merely pointing out that spending £500 on tyres on a £1000 pound car doesn't make sense to me. Well unless someone sold you a F355 for 1000 or something stupid.

Slicks or not, I wouldn't use 500 quids worth of tyres driving to the shops and back. Well, depending on my wages ofc but being a skint student I can't imagine it. I guess being forced to be frugal gives one a different perspective.

and a drag-spec beetle :D

sorry, it does seem stupid.

I put the beetle on hold while i finished this course. The GSXR is summer only.

Savings are running out, and more to the point the resale value of mr2's is very low so I have to keep within a budget.

The beetle is a single seater so not very usable and I need a daily so here we are.

What can I say, I'm a tyre snob. I don't care what a car's worth, I just want the best rubber between the car and the road, especially on an MR2, a very tyre sensitive car.

you're right there.

This thread was worth while, pulled me away from the 195/50's to get the more sensible 205/50/R15's. I'm sure the difference will be huge with these Toyo Proxes compared to the old ones.

Thanks for the advice.

And this. Admittedly I have an N/A, but:

Driving rain + Red Line Dump in first gear = no/very very little wheelspin.

I literally have no idea how they do it. They aren't just 'a bit' better than the other tyres available, they are streets ahead.

Sounds good, just before I took this off the road it lit up the tyres in 1st and 2nd at a quarter throttle.

also..

Marf, were your car photos in your garage taken at the multi story in Worthing?

Dumbfounding isn't it? I probably couldnt get away with a no wheelspin clutch dump launch in the wet with the Turbo, but I could floor it in 1st from low revs and it'd grip right up through the gears on low boost.

The AD07 was pretty poor in the wet, let alone sub zero temps. The 08 is light years ahead, can't wait to get some on the RX7
