Tyres for standard teardrops

Post by Ben »

Hi all

I'm picking up my Mk1 next weekend, and one of the first things that will need doing is a full set of tyres. It is running the standard teardrops which I will be keeping.

I know tyre quextions have been covered over and over, but I can't find anything from the last year or two. Can anyone recommend some decent tyres for a Supercharger running on teardrops? It'll be a fairweather car so not fussed about rain tyres etc.

Actually, while we're at it, can anyone remind me of the standard tyre size please?

Thanks!

If you can find them Goodyear Eagle F1's are the best I've ever had on a mk1 but I think you've more chance of finding Shergar. (Who's probably in Tesco's!)

My current recommendation is Vredestein Hi-Trac 2, almost as good and not too expensive.

SC has same tyre sizes as all other MK1's. 185/60/14.

As for tyres well its a question of what is available. Yoko C Drives are a good option.

Thought so, I just couldn't remember what that was!

Thanks for the recommendations all :thumleft:

Just to point out that the above link is to H rated tyres - as the SC is capable ( in theory ) of over 130mph, you need to fit V rated ones

SC is limited to 180km/h so 112mph, so it's fine.

But I expect the C Drives are rated to 130mph.

I'm not sure how insurance companies and VOSA view electronic speed limiters ( which can easily be disabled ) v. the actual top speed of the vehicle when it comes to the speed rating of tyres fitted :-k

If they are OK with them, then H rated would be OK, if not then V rated is needed.

Well there are cars that are speed limited and sold here that can run lower spec tyres because they are speed limited to 155mph, stuff like M3's and all that.

So I don't see any difference between that and a speed limited car from the JDM market unless the manner in which the speed limited is not approved over here.

I was/am running 195/50 t1R's. Only got 6 months life out of them but bloody hell they were planted to the road! I have noticed i think i am running excessive toe in as they keep wearing more on the outer edge. Either this week or next week will be fitting some hankook 185;s to try out.

Been using c drives for a couple years now. Great tyre for the price and hard wearing. I ate through a set of rear 15" T1-R's in around 6k miles.

If you can get them in that size Yoko AD08s are awesome tyres - cheaper than Toyo R888s and just as good!
