[Mk2] [NA] Startup problem

Post by snuffbox »

Ive got a bit of a starting problem that's leaving me confused..

I've only had my 2 for nearly a month and never had any starting issues till now, I recently gave it a bit of a mini service changing the spark plugs, dist cap, rotor arm, air filter and coil pack.

Went to start it up after and turned a few times but no go... Checked everything over tried again and same, this was yesterday since then it doesn't even turn now the only response is a fast ticking noise similar to a machine gun so i assume the relay is working, but after a while that too dies down..

So far ive removed, refitted and retried the original parts, fitted another battery, removed the starter motor in hope of it being stuck of which it 'seems' alright, as of yet still nothing if i leave the car for a few hours and go back to it it'll turn sometimes for literally one second then go back to just the clicking, also upon turning the key the voltmeter goes hectic and also when i turn the ignition on the radio goes hectic (on and off at the speakers, while the head unit being constantly on) although i have tried another battery it's as if it is that...

Any ideas or comments would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers :(

clicking means not enough power. Jump start it.

assuming everything else is in good working order.

Sounds like a flat battery. Have you drop tested the batteries you've tried? How new are they?

+ 1 give it a jump or a bump start if needs b ... New battery and check voltage with a meter you should be looking around 14.4v running .. get someone to start car while you check voltage should not drop below 10v while cranking ... :thumleft:

Cheers for the input guys,

It was the battery jumped it today and started fine gonna grab a new one over the weekend to be safe, it would appear the 'apparently new' spare battery i used to test it with also needs a good charge then... At least it won't be a costly first month to owning a mr2 as it could of been.

Cheers :thumleft:
