Mk1 Subwoofer

Does anybody know of someone selling a working mk1a under seat subwoofer as been looking, but not willing to pay £40 for one, just trying to keep as many original parts as possible.

Ie really not worth having.

Neil_turbo on here makes subwoofer boxes for the MK1 that fit behind the seat. Surely a much better bet.

did think about it but don't want to run all new cabling for amp. Also where i live ya don't want a hint of anything showing as it wont be there in the morning.

I guess you can't avoid running new cabling. But a sub without an amp isn't going to be great. Neil's boxes are behind the seat so you can't see anything as they are on the floor behind the seat if that makes sense. Easy to cover the box in carpet too.

It's just I'm worried that if you fit a 25 year old subwoofer from a MK1a I really think you are going to be so dissapointed as audio tech has moved on a fair old bit since then!

I see your point, any idea how much a single box would be and what size sub it takes?

I've got a couple of mk1 factory subs if you really want one. Couldn't tell you whether they work or not though.

He did some work on my car, he's a good friend and made a rear shelf for me as well as some other stuff!

Cost on his site is £79 for the specific box made for the MK1.

If i where to put a sub in my MK1, it would probably be one or two of these: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IL6ckppNEC ... 13-WS.html They don`t require very large boxes, and they don`t need to be ventilated so you save a couple of liters there too.

Expensive, YES, but I had a 15" Focal in my 86 Camry, and to say that it played the hell out of most subs I have ever heard is to put it mildly. Reached 120dB@20Hz, with only 240W Estimated peak at 140-145dB at 35-40Hz, and it still did throw a punch that felt like being kicked in the chest.
That sub was the a early version of the Utopia series which i linked too, think it went out of production in 1995, still not seen anything as good. Of course, the 5" will not be close to that, but i still have great fate in Focal, give it a decent amp and it should be good.

As an alternative, i think the polyglass series from Focal is supposed to be really good.

PS: Take this with a grain of salt, i am a Focal-fan

I went down the route of building a speaker enclosure that fits in place of the centre storage box. It is wired in place of the 2 useless tweeters behind your ears (buzzers more like) and has a woofer and tweeter with a crossover and cost me a grand total of £20. I recently was given 2 much better speakers so I'm going to switch these over later in the summer. It isn't a sub-woofer, but it has plenty of bass.

I have a JL audio W3V2 10" behind my passenger seat in a custom box my brother made. Sounds awesome. You can hide an amplifier under the passenger seat too

The difficulty i had with the box, was getting it to sit right against all the contours!

All of the edges pertude to ensure it sits square, without leaving any gaps.

Has anyone ever tried replacing the speaker/cone in a MK1a 'sub' as an alternative?

I dont think anyone has bothered as it would still sound rubbish. I have a SWE-1000 in the passenger footwell as it doesnt fit under the seat and i have both my seats all the way back. If you can still find one the SWD-1600 is a good little sub to add a little extra depth and very small.
