avensis 5th gear conversion parts from the US - group buy anyone?

Post by russthedude »

morning all, I've just fired off an email to a company in the US (www.trademotion.com) to ask if they'll do a discount on the parts needed to do the extended 5th gear mod (33428-32040 and 33336-33020). My local toyota parts dept quoted me £210 for these, but this place in the US (which is the only one I've looked at so far) is knocking them both out for $189, or £117 in real money. Obviously shipping will need to be added on, and I'm assuming those lovely people at HMRC will hold them hostage when they arrive until a ransom has been paid.

If the supplier can get the price down a bit more, and ship them to one address in the UK I think it could definately be worth following up. Would anyone else be interested? obviously it depends on price, I'd like to think that if we got, say 10% off their price, combined shipping, HMRC pillaging etc, £140 should be do-able perhaps? that said, I'm guessing these thigns aren't light so shipping might be our biggest enemy?

anyway, just putting the feelers out, i tried to post in the group byu bit but I'm not allowed??

Insured shipping, import duty, VAT and handling fee takes you to £190ish.

the 2 gears weigh 2 kilos at the most their not very heavy at all. ive just fitted them to my '2 along with a mk3 lsd, they also cost me £210. if you can get enough people interested it may be worth approaching a toyota dealer about getting them at trade price or a reduced cost. my local dealer is quite good with car parts and used to discount me stuff for my gt4 as i was in the gt4oc. i didn't even think to ask if they do something similar for mr2 owners clubs and ive spent a fortune there recently ](*,)

you'll also need to look into making/getting a tool to remove the 5th gear synchro. it is quite a basic tool easily made if you can weld, but not everyone can.

This is a dumb question but what does the avensis 5 gear conversion actually do?

I assume it's longer so you cruise at lower revs in 5th. Less fuel used on the motorway at the expense of acceleration (which there isn't much of in 5th anyway).

Just been reading about this mod on the Woodsport website, they quote £250 to change the fifth gear which seems very good value considering the cost of the parts.

http://www.woodsport.org/joomla/index.p ... sd-gearbox

Also checked the part numbers on the EPC, there are a number of different Toyota models that use the same part numbers quoted in the first post, cheapest option may be to remove the gears from a scrapper.

ISTR there is a similar mod using slightly different gears from an N/A ST20x Celica.

Are you thinking of the differential gears from the ST185?

I'm doing that to Simon Hick's drag racing car. It changes the effective ratios of ALL the gears. Good if you're producing mahoosive torque.

Cost of parts approx £600. Requires strip down of gearbox plus full dismatling/rebuilding of output shaft assembly.

Yes, the final drive mod is exactly what I was thinking of! My head is full of gearing ideas for other cars at the moment...

I thought about finding a scrapper to nab the gears from, but the problems with this for me are;

how knackered is that scrapped gearbox
will it definately have the right parts
I would have to hand over the whole gearbox to a garage for them to whip the parts out and swap them

I wouldn't be doing any of the fitting myself, so I could be paying labour to have the secondhand parts removed that are either wrong or knackered and then I'd have to splash out all over again.

I'm still not sure how long it would take to claw back enough petrol to cover the cost of the swap, I don't really do too much motorway driving, but when I do it hurts my wallet doing 70ish with the revs sitting around 3500, plus it's needless extra wear on the engine atthe moment, and extra noise inside the car.

That supplier got back to me though..... parts are out of stock and on back order. that's all they said lol. I'll see if I can find some others but guess the story will be the same for them, will keep looking though.

I haven't got the foggiest lol the woodsport site says it takes 5th gear ratio down from 0.82:1 to 0.73:1

I'm not sure how the maths works though but I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell us what the result is :?

Those ratios are approximatly 12% different so I would say whatever your doing it will be 12% different. i.e. 3200 rpm will be 12% higher speed or 70mph will be 12% less rpm.

What options are there for turbo cars, I guess the ST185 mod is for turbo'd gearboxes?

Is yours an NA or Turbo?

The Turbo 5th gear ratio is 0.73:1, the NA is 0.82:1.

mines a mk3 with a 1mz-fe engine and (afaik!) a mk2 NA gearbox.

Thought it was the ST165 diff that was longer?
