Easy Tyre question; aw11

Post by MrLuke »

Im after a bit of advice here.

I want some rear tyres that are cheap / mid range but have stiff sidewalls. I went through a few different sets on the mk2 and found there is nothing less confidence inspiring than floppy rear tyres.

Im going for R888s on the front but I dont want to spend that amount on rear tyres when dancing the back around makes me smile so much :D

So yes, stiff cheap rear tyres please.

Standard wheel size so 185/50-60/14

Got C.Drives on my 14's and they've been really good. Lasting alot longer then the T1-R's on my 15's.

The AD08 are likened to R888s and have been quoted in places being a better tyre. My rears lasted 28k

Not sure how tongue-in-cheek this was, but I went on plenty of enthusiastic drives in various conditions with budget Runways on (came with the car) and never had an issue. Tail out on wet roundabouts but only ever predictable and easily caught :-k

On topic - had good experiences with various Toyos and Yoko A539s.

I don't particularly want to arrive backwards in a ditch hence asking for stiff sidewalls as they are more predictable and controllable. I only have pictures of me driving my mk2 at the moment but I hope the below meets your approval..

Tbh the biggest problem is, the complete lack of choice in standard sizes.

This is partly why I'm likely looking at 15's for my car as there is so much better choice in the 195/50/15 size. In that size I'd look at Advan's or S-Drives are relatively cheap and have a very stiff sidewall.

I agree T1'rs have sidewalls made of jelly. Remember we put a pair of them on the DC2 (which was a weird size) and they were absolutely rubbish, with a lack of feel, felt like the front end was squidgy and imprecise compared to the OEM RE010's that we did have on there.

Yoko C-Drives are your only likely choice really.

Thought I would add a bit of closure to this thread.

What I ended up doing was buying Toyo R888s in 185/60/14 which I fitted to the front and I now have my old front tyres on the rear which are the Sp6000s (I think) which are supposed to be the OE fitment? (fitted these after the drift day). Seems to be okay but I still have more rear grip than I need, mainly because one of the rear droplink bolts has fallen off so no rear ARB.

I was concerned that I wouldnt be able to get enough heat into the R888s to make them work on a dusty 400 yard banger track however I found that I was melting them at 30psi so dropped them down to 28ish. Really good tyre actually, transformed the front. Havent had them in standing water yet but cant imagine there will be an issue.

We've used R888s on our rally car. Ok in the damp, not too bad in rain but crap with any standing water and very hard to get heat in the front on cold days.

I've got some crusty old mk1 wheels with a variety of Chinese or Korean tyres that would be perfect for drifting (or roundabouts).

Where are you?
