mr2 turbo - gear ratio too short?

Post by nickg07 »

im loving the mr2 but i feel that the gear ratio in first and second is too short. id much prefer iy if 1st went to say 35 and second to 65-70 or some. it feels like by the time i get going important about to hit the limiter or something. 3rd and 4th are fine though.

does anyone feel the same?

60 is just before the stock redline(7200) in second.

im with marf - 60in 2nd tops.

thing is i just came from a 6 speed corolla tsport 2zz and that had a noticeably longer first and second even if second only went to 65.

My redline is at 7700 thanks to a protoype ECU. Definitely better for second gear overtakes, find myself hitting the rev limiter on the stock ECU.

i don't hit the limiter - important too scared lol but the rush is over answer it feels like you barely have time to shift from 1-2-3 !

raising the limiter sounds good- internal work to make it accept this valvetrain wise?

important sure the na gets to 70mph in first but not the turbo ..? why Toyota?

tidied up my first post it read really badly as i rushed the post on my phone.

I think top could do with being a bit taller, prefer cruising at lower RPM than it does.

You can fix that by changing the final drive for one from a Celica.

I like the stock ratio's, but just wish there was a 6 speed box that was easy to drop in! a longer 5th would be nice for the motorway but on 60mph roads I think would be too low.

Cheers for the info dude :) Something to consider in future if the box comes out at any point. Any particular Celica or are they all the same in terms of gear ratio?

It's very specific, and I can't remember which one  Think Century Motorsport used to offer the conversion.
