lol

I have indeed heard of under shiming your springs- it's a great way of avoid recutting all your valve seats whan someone has gotten a bit carried away lapping in some of the valves, but you want to match spring rates...

But lets be honest- if you're deepening your valve seat to avoid buying a bucket shim, and have to buy a spring seat shim instead what exactly is the point? Surely it's easier, and more sensible to simply buy a bucket shim in the first place :-s

Most people will just opt for new shims though.

Yes I agree, but sometimes...........

I have had to make my own shims up for under the valve seat retainer in the past.

did you use a magnet to hold shims while grinding them.
I need to grind mine down after getting valve seats cut.

Yes the machine has an leverarm magnet,

When I did mine I had 2 flat plates on the magnet block either side of the shims just in case one tried to make a sharp exit! with the shims laid out in a line going away from me. The grinding wheel will cut left to right (its like watching tennis!) then move for and aft.

Most surface grinders are imperial so convertions must be made, its a bit head scratching at times.

spoke to my machine shop they said they would machine down my valves and then i would have to buy new shims to shim back up.
this seams to be double cost.

was thinking i could just get Kawasaki 13mm diameter shims to sizes i require, then not have double cost.

machine shop seam not willing to grind down my shims, which i would have thought would be easyest option. will have to hunt for machine shop that will grind them down or buy Kawasaki shims cost £56 + delivery.

any thoughts on this greatly appreciated.
smallest shim i need is 1.93 largest is 2.3mm Toyota's smallest is 2.5mm shim under bucket and Kawasaki's is 2.05mm

very frustrated now don't realy want to remove valves again :-k #-o
