What tool to remove 'do not remove' bolt!?

Post by Racer7 »

Hi,

As usual the simple jobs I look for never are. I wanted to remove my [rev5] spoiler off the car so I could polish/wax up the boot properly.

Two of the bolts are standard 10mm but this one is just weird (far right of image):

Any idea what sort of tool I need to remove it? Surely it can't be impossible as they need to be put together in the first place!

Had to soak the blade in WD40 for ages for it to even move ( i daresay it never has in it's 11year life). But the actual ends just don't want to budge. I'm hoping if I can get the blade off then I can tackle each end individually and have less chance of screwing up the whole spoiler!

Cheers guys!

They're actually very cleverly designed screws, I know from personal experience! They only work in a clockwise direction, hence the flats. When you try to turn them anti-clockwise the screwdriver rides up the little ramps and you get no purchase.

The only way that I think you could do it is to try some long nose pliers on the outside diameter of the screw head, or possibly tapping them around with the blade of the screwdriver on the outside of the screw head. Both are a bit "yeehaa" though!

you could try glueing or welding a nut to it.

Not removed them from a car before but other places and had to resort to drilling them out and replacing, seems on odd choice for a car, usually used in security applications...

cheers guys.

Tried Slartys yee-ha methods but no joy.

I think I will do the dremel it into a flat head friendly bolt. I don't fancy drilling it out.

Still on topic and maybe one more for Slarty - is it me or does the spoiler really not want to come off?! I dunno what the hell this is stuck down with but I'm giving a bit of force and the boot lid just looks like it wants to bend outwards with it.

It is the points where the two bolts (through to the boot) are.

A friend suggested a paint stripper/heat gun (same thing right?) but I'm a bit reluctant to put something like that close to my pride n joy (the car I mean).

I've started so I need to finish as the pads are all knackered now and need to be replaced! #-o

You know there are 3 fixings per side, don't you? Two studs and one small bolt, further back....

Yep. The small bolt nearer to the front of the car is.fine. The two ten mm bolts are the problem. Not so much the bolt but this is where the spoiler.wont seem to budge.

i like my rev5 spoiler and dont want to f it up. But as i've made the pads turn to mus ive commited myself to removing it!

Ps ignore typos i.m onmy phone!

Hmm that's odd. Once I've removed the two nuts and the bolt from either side, the spoiler pops off very easily :-k

I wonder if the gaskets have welded themselves to your boot lid and spoiler? I know what you mean though, I'd be very nervous about trying to force the spoiler off!

If i take a heat gun to the underside of the bonnet is that goin to potentially knacker the boot and spoiler? Feels like the spoiler is.fibreglass bit not sure whether this and rhe paint could take.it.

I suspect it is the seals so unless there are any good alternatives to a heat gun aka paint stripper then i'm a bit stuck (boom, boom ](*,) )

Yeah, I reckon as long as you're careful and don't hold the heat gun too close it might work. I'd do it from the underside of the boot though, just incase anything does go wrong!

Hold it about 6-7-8 inches away at least, and then work your way closer until your feel heat getting into the boot lid.

Of course if it does go wrong, I'm not responsible for anything

I have removed those screws countless times when opening ECU storage boxes and the trick is to use a hack saw blade and make a shallow cut along the screw head where the sloped off bit finishes and then use a large flatblade screwdriver

Or simply undo using a flatblade screw driver but apply lots of pressure to stop the screwdriver slipping

Or use a decent pair of pliers to turn the screw head

Just reviving this thread as I would like to take apart my spoiler. Is the best was to remove the "do not remove" bolt to cut a slot for a screwdriver???
If so, I'm off to buy a dremel
