Draining coolant and changing water pump.

Post by Damian »

Hello.

Going to try and do this job tomorrow. Is there anything I need to know / avoid when draining and re-filling coolant or changing the water pump?

Thanks.

Can't help you with the water pump change as I've never done it but here is the "how to" for the coolant drain, refill & bleed procedure.

HI bod.

Thanks for this.

I've only got 11 litres of pre mixed Toyota coolant. What should I do. TOp up with water or undiluted coolant?

11 litres will probably be enough, 12.4 is for a completely empty system, it's unlikely you will manage to completely empty it. If it's not enough, it's only going to be a little short, I'd use undiluted coolant to top it up if you need to.

May be a bit late but don't forget to loosen the water pump pulley bolts before you remove the belt.

I always forget.

Thats good advice. I forgot to do that when I did my cam belt. That really makes the job a PITA.

Don't forget to get a new O ring for the back plate of the water pump. It's probably not included with a generic water pump.

I didn't replace it and it started to leak, had to do the whole thing over.

Yeah forgot about these little blighters so had to nip to B&Q for a couple of new ones from the plumbing section. Hopefully they'll be ok!

I think the most important part of a coolant change is to measure what has been drained in litres before you refil.

It gives you an immediate indication that you have not satisfactorily refilled.

I removed 7 litres last september, it took 6 litres straightaway and some time and burping before the other litre was taken.

Instead i poured it all away down the drain... #-o
