[Mk2] [Turbo] Car feeling sluggish... is it im my head?

Post by alan-2-turbo »

Hi fellas ive had my late rev2 turbo for about 6 months now.

I've come from a background of VX220 Turbo, Focus RS, Charged Clio Cup so i know the feeling of speed and boost well.

Anyhow when i first bought the the MR2 it felt nice and quick running at setting 2 on the boost controller - (1 bar of boost) -

I was wheel spinning into 1st and second and all happy it was the power i'd craved.

Mods are only boltons i have an aftermarket exhaust (mongoose) no cat or pre cat whatsoever, a cone filter and an SBC Blitz boost controller.

It felt very powerful for a rev2 is a low mileage example when i bought it but now feels quite bogged down in all gears, i.e its difficult to get wheel spin in 1st or 2nd even dumping the clutch at high revs.

I used to plant it on the motorway and the power was immense but it seems restricted in some way at the moment.

Any ideas what to do to restore him to good health?

It doesnt splurt of hesitate, it just feels paticularly sluggish.

Cheers

Al

and just to note - it ran on a rolling road at 246bhp at 5374rpm just before i had it so should be healthy for the age.

air leak between afm and throttle body will cause bogging down/overfuelling, worn king lead is a favourite, these cars munch through dizzy caps aswell, coil, fuel injector pack, water temp sensor...
You can test the coil, inj pack with a multi-meter...as per the BGB and your king lead should show no resistance if tested for continuity. I have recently replaced all my I/C hoses and clips (similar prob to you) then I sealed all the joints with a smear of high temp silicone...also checked the coil king lead well for any dampness and then sealed that on with a blob of silicone to keep moisture out. You can do the spray test around the pipes to show up any leaks but not if it only leaks on full boost. Do you have any error codes?

Thanks for the advice fella, i did some basics last night, recalibrated my SBC and then reset my ECU and went for a play, when booting it the response is 100% better so the ECU was deffo retarding the power.

Now despite it being warm outside and after 15 minutes of VERY spirited driving i note the intercooler fan does not seem to run.

This i guess would account for the heatsoak problems i'm also having.

Anyhow i followed the temp sensor on the engine bay lid to its power connector and disconnected it and hoped the fan would go into continuous safe mode and it didnt!

So thats why im stuck at 0.6 bar!

Just ordered an ebay IC and now a shroud and 9" spal fan, so hopefully i'll get full power and more soon :0)
