[Mk2] [Generic] Gearboxes

Post by CelicaGT4 »

I'm trying to identify if the NA and turbo boxes are the same at the engine side of things - i.e. is the input spline and shaft size the same? The plan is to use the engine and box from a GE in a project, then when I get bored of the GE just drop in a GTE. I'm aware the driveshafts are slightly different so it would make more sense to just risk the GE box with the GTE torque. Is the wheel-end side of the shafts the same as the tubby or is that different again? I don't want to get into a situation where I have to buy half a car again at a later date.

I think I'm right in saying that any 'box, turbo or N/A will fit either engine. The driveshafts are another matter though, I can't say for certain so I'll leave that to someone more in the know to answer :thumleft:

Well that at least answers that part. I couldn't see them being much different, it would seem a waste of effort to vary the input shaft across more or less identical engines.

I've read that the shafts splines on the turbo are slightly shorter possibly (no idea why, can see that they might be shorter for an LSD car, maybe thats the difference) but again can't see why they'd vary them at the hub end apart from with/without ABS.

I know my non-turbo box did not accept a turbo clutch as the splines are smaller in diameter on the non-turbo one.

Thats about it. Works well on a V6 though

Hmm ok, that throws a spanner in the works then. I'm basically going to have to consider buying a turbo from the start.

i will be swapping my na gearbox for a turbo one on my V6 sometime (ish)

ill need the gearbox, turbo gearbox mounts, turbo clutch, driveshafts, hubs, bearing carrier (for the OS driveshaft) and whilst the NA gear linkage cables work they are alot smoother to engage the gears i have been told if you use the turbo linkage cables too.

So it really does make no sense buying and then swapping for me it seems. If the hubs etc were only needed because of relative lengths like track width changes but would bolt up it'd be OK but if they're different splines etc then it's a no go and I need the tubby complete effectively. Shame, can't seem to find them for a reasonable price (reasonable as a buyer lol). I've been looking around for insurance/accident write-offs but can't find any near me that I could drag back on a trailer.

Might end up going down the route of a 6A12 from an FTO, much lower tuning potential but does have a lovely wail from the V6 and 200hp to start with. Plus whole cars come in at half the price of a tubby 2.

It's a shame to rip a nice MR2 apart if it's usable though, just to put its still beating heart into a spaceframe lol. And while £1300 is a good price for a tubby, it's currently a tad high for my plans which are somewhat more grounded (hence the original aim to go with the GE for a while). I have seen a good few Mivec manual FTOs going for 500 quid needing welding work, which is quite a difference. New engines and boxes for them are ~300/400 all in which is a bit more stomachable! Shame really as I love the 3S and have spent years working with one. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a write-off but I suspect I'll be looking elsewhere.
