[Mk2] [NA] Are Mk2 Kumhos not made any more for the rear?

Post by brgbrm »

I tried on the Kumho site which didn't offer rears for the Mk2, so I assume they're not made any more? So is it time to ditch Kumhos?

I've obviously tried searching for KU31s here, for alternatives, but any suggestions, for mostly road use, with odd track days, and progressive? Again, I've searched for tyre threads but there are so many 'I think Yanwoo 718s are great!' / 'Yahwoo 718s are awful!' that it make decisions difficut ...

i recently had this problem
i have the ku31's all round on 16s
had a slow puncture in one of the rears (225/45/16) and could not find new ones for sale, ended up getting a 2nd hand one from ebay
probably go back to toyo t1r again next time

would help if you listed the sizes you are looking for  For sure tyres are very subjective and a few years ago I'd say Goodyear F1's every time but not any more. Tis always a gamble as high end performance tyres are too much for my wallet and the Scottish weather rules out track day tyres for a daily driver :(

As to size, I'm just looking for the rears that the Kumho website tyre finder came up with, ie 225/50/15.

I'll have a look at falkens, thanks.

It's a shame I'm going to have 2 different makes on the car for a while.

I have Kumho Ecsta on my 17" rims on the rear and theyve lasted 5000 miles. Are they really soft? Even my Goodyear Eagles lasted longer than these #-o

For 225/50/15 tyres, it's driving me nuts clicking on combo boxes trying to see what's available. In sub £110 it comes down to T1-R or Falkens. Or something called 'Nexen', and Hankooks.

In my web travels, I've come across this site which looks quite good:

www.tyrepriceadvisor.co.uk

I'm still thoroughly confused and disappointed I can't get R1R or KU31s though :(

I have a set of non-staggered 16" wheels, would I be better off switching wheels?

I had the same problem recently with my 16" Staggered set
Ended up with T1-R all round

It's really hard choosing, the more I read on here, the less I know, eg there's threads where people swear by t1-r/falkens/nankooks, but other people swear *at* those tyres!
I wonder how often tyres companies are actually producing tyres that are rubbish at £80-100 a wheel, and how much is down to other factors like alignment.

Depends on what sort of driving you do I think. I got 8000 out of my rears so far and there is another 1000 or so left. 4K of that is motorway stuff.

It's a very subjective thing, tyre choice. I find them a good mix of grip/wear/cost and have them on all 3 of my cars. Seems a shame that they have stopped making them in standard rear Mk2 sizes.

Only thing I can suggest is get on the blower to some local tyre places, their suppliers may have some left in stock. :thumleft:

I feel your pain marc !
I'm in the same situation but ever since I bought my MR2 I've only used T1R's front/rear on standard 15" wheels.
I use 32psi front, 36psi rear (4 psi difference for the road).
There is some tyre wall flex but they are very progressive, and most of the time on the road it's really not worth pushing it anyway. They work fantastic in the wet and dry.
I have to say I cannot fully judge them yet as I haven't had the car set up by Wheels In Motion, I believe this will make a big difference to the feel from them. (better or worse I don't know yet)
I replace the rears usually each year, so around 6000 miles at a guess, maybe a little more.

I do have another set of 15" which I'll put some R888's on for track days but as for now, I'm happy enough with T1R's for day to day stuff but the only solution is to pick up a larger set of wheels for more choice ](*,)

Thanks Rob. I finally got very fed up with looking on the web so phoned the local company I've been buying tyres from for years. The person I spoked to gave me the choice between (actually funnmy aside as soon as I said the tyre size he knew it was an MR2!) of t1-r, falken or Nexen and as I was umming and arming saying I'd heard of the first 2 ... and he said he trecommended the last of those, a great tyre for the price; he sells 2-300 a month.

Now, I'm deliberately not going search on Nexen on IMOC, see how I get on with them, and may report back ... :)

marc:

What made you go for the Nexen's ?
I personally wouldn't be listening to someone who sells tyres for a living, unless you know them personally and they actually know what they are talking about

They are the OE for MR2's and the NSX. I have found mine fine in the wet as long as the temperature isnt too low.

I got them from blackcircles just over a month ago.

If it's the nexen n2000 then I'm betting it was the price that persuaded him, I wouldn't be happy running crappy budgets on an mr2. Personally I'd rather spend as much as I can on tyres, they're the only thing keeping you on the road after all.

Just his recommendation. I've been going there years. Mind you the fact that they were cheapest by quite a way (the T1-Rs I think would have been £115-ish with vat) was quite a factor! I think the Nexens are 60-something plus VAT.

They have laser alignment where I'm going and can adjust the front but not the rear. They can *check* the rear but not adjust. Is this the norm? I have more wear on the outer edges at the rear, what is needed to adjust if not 4 wheel laser alignment?
