Installing Power Steering into non PS MR2??
Hi guys, was just wondering if its possible to install power steering into my mr2? if yes, how much it would cost and is it worth??
Re: Installing Power Steering into non PS MR2??
the main issue is the part that the steering coupling that attaches to the rack the chassis is different so youll need to weld a ps version in there, i was looking at going the other way to save weight but when i had them both side by side i thought

nah

a few holes will be needed and then you'll have to bolt the pump up too.

also then theres the electrics, i assume your loom wont have all the gubbings
(technical term) for the ecu and controller/relay.
and your slip ring wont be for PS as it senses steering wheel movement to switch the ps on i think

too much trouble id say

It's possible, and it's something we've done for a customer in the past.
The problem is that once you've bought all of the required parts and paid for the labour you could almost certainly have bought a complete replacement car
*with* power steering.

Re: Installing Power Steering into non PS MR2??
what about going the other way? i'd like to dump my PS for weight saving reasons.

is it only a matter of chaning the rack, column and welding in a mount?

Have you looked to see if you have p/s fitted and its just not working? Rev1s can have p/s fitted already

On the US oc a lot of the owners just drain their powersteering fluid and remove the pump.
Using a bung on the bolt.
A few have been running the rack dry for years apparently with no problems.

You get the quickness of a PS rack with the feel of a non PS rack at the expense of burning a few extra calories maneuvering at low speeds

I'm gonna try it next month as I ordered one of the bungs for a fiver from HUXRacing.

Thank you guys for the info, its seems it's not worth the money, and i can see more people try to do the vice versa, the thing is, im planing turbo swap, more power.
I've tried track days with n/a, and its get very hard to control at low speed corners and especially when counter steering, trying to control the slide, it just throws u in the opposite direction its like u can barely hold the steering wheel, i can't imagine the hustle with turbo power and no PS.
