My 202 Black Rev 2 GTS (Pic Heavy)

Post by malcster »

Well, I bought my MR2 Turbo back in 2009, and have done a few things to it since, so I thought it was about time to put together a small "build" thread.

Not sure you can really call it a build when it's just bolt-on mods really, but anyway, here goes:

As I said, bought back in 2009, after much searching for something that wasn't hanging together with rust, or fitted with lexus lights and the like:

I took it for a bit of a drive up north to get used to it, and took some pics:

The first thing I wanted to do (after a general service - plugs/oil etc) was to freshen up the suspension - change the springs to something a little more progressive, and also add some new droplinks:
Image

Image

A few months after, a brand new set of OEM black bilstiens were ordered up and fitted:
Image

The car seemed to be handling a lot sharper now, and I was fairly happy with the results.
Image

Next I wanted to refurb the Super Advans, which had seen better days.
I really wasn't too keen on the silver colour either:
Image

After doing some reading as what colours these wheels were available in from the factory, and taking inspiration from the Border Racing SW20, I decided Gold was the colour to go for (with a polished lip):
Image

Image

Next I decided to fit a Blitz Turbo Timer, to take any strain from a trackday etc off the turbo (and I always thought they were kinda kewl)...
Image

Then I took a trip with a few mates up to Crail Raceway:
Image

Image

Image

...where I Managed a 14.3 @ 98.7mph:

Image

Which I thought wasn't too bad for a fairly stock example.

Next up, I wanted to add some lip-age.
I liked the chunkiness of the Border Sideskirts, but thought the front bumper was a little over the top. So, I opted for a comprimise, and paired the Border Sideskirts, with a UAD180 lip from Bomex:

After a bit of paint, the skirts & lip were fitted to the car:

The Edinburgh pot holes then took their toll on the Top Mounts, and the passenger side had started to knock.
I decided to replace them with some Cusco Pillowball adjustables:
Image

Image

...then took it for a full Laser Geometry Set up...
Image

I then decided it was time to up the power, so added an electronic Blitz Dual SBC Boost Controller...
Image

Image

... and some new Cold-Grade Platinum Plugs as a precaution for the boost increase...
Image

I then added a Blitz Decat pipe:

Next I wanted to finish off the rear of the car, as it always seemed to look high with the standard bumper.
Initially I had thought of going for a Toms bumper, but after looking at some pictures, I decided it might not be low and chunky enough to match up with the Border Skirts.
So I went for a set of Border Spats in the end.
Here they are pre-paint:

...and then the Spats fitted:

I then went for another Geometry setup, just to make sure everything was as it should be:

Image

Due to running higher than stock boost, and the all-round crap-ness of the stock SMIC, I decided to upgrade it.
I was thinking of going down the ST205 CC route, but thought that it really was quite a bit of hassle, to do.
After a few weeks of reading, in the end I bought a GReddy SMIC:
Image

Image

Went for a drive down the A702 to Moffat with some mates, testing out the new intercooler.
It seems to make the turbo spool up a little slower (possibly down to the size of the thing in comparison to the stock SMIC?)...
Image

Image

Image

...brought back a trophy...
Image

More breathing next, and I purchased a full-stainless 5Zigen Border 304 Max exhaust, partially heat wrapped.
This was mated up to the Blitz Decat pipe:

Next I changed the brake lights back to they way they would have been in Jappannyland (4 lights instead of 2).
I wired up a foglight switch-over with some trusty maplin diodes...
Image

Image

...and then it snowed...
Image

Image

Image

That's it so far, next up with probably be some poly bushes of some sort, and some new tyres, as these are starting to get low.

Thanks - yeah maybe one something different spoiler-wise, though I do quite like the stock one.

Might go for some Rev 3 lights too, but I change my mind so often to the style I prefer. The original rear clusters seem to give the car a kind of squat/racey look I think. 8)

I reckon the discs & pads are gonna need done sometime soon too, good excuse to go for some slotted jobbies \:D/

I have to say, the boost increase is hands down the biggest bang for buck thing I have done so far! you really do feel it pull hard up to a bar.
I quite like the ability to change the boost from the drivers seat too, I usually have it just at actuator pressure (0.5bar) for driving around the city really.

The Edinburgh Moffat road really is superb - you're right!
One of my faves nearby anyway.

Where abouts in Edinburgh are you from?

I think we'll need to have a Central Scotland meet sometime, I've hardly spoken to anyone else with an MR2 around Edinburgh, it's Honda-City up here!

Im by Granton Harbour but always driving around the town as got family in Leith , I seen a couple other mr2's around but mostly chav ridden ones or hairdressers in there mk3's..

Did you fit the boost controller on your own?, Its the next mod im looking to get , ether a greedy profec b or a blitz one like yours.

I meet would cool, just dunno how many people with mr2s around central Scotland.

Maybe we should put a meet up for a months time or so..

Hah, it definetely is.

Really nice 2, has come along nicely. :thumleft:

I'll 3rd the Moffat road too, good drive, found it quite creepy driving alone on it at night though.

I'd be interested in a meet too, once I sort mine out and get it back on the road, know quite a few owners down my way too so could get them involved too. :)
