I picked this up a while back, still not really sure what to make of it. I think it’s pretty accurate to say its GTA set in the wild west – but possibly without the fun or variety! It’s almost stuck in some limbo between GTA and a RPG – but without the mayhem making of the former or the depth of the latter.

Like the most recent Rockstar games the story is engaging, and the characters are well developed. I just find the game play is pretty flat, and the missions easy, repetitive and pretty boring. It just strikes me as a lot of go here; go there without any real pay off or sense of accomplishment. Missions are fairly predictable and in certain cases you are asking why am I even doing this?

I have played through and I am now south of the border but I am lacking the inclination to actually carry on with it.

They say it’s the biggest game world they have done, but all in all it’s a pretty pointless statement to make. Its nothing but vast expanses of desert or plains with a handful of towns consisting of a few buildings at most and nothing in between. Take the empty space out and it’s actually a tiny play area. If you’re lucky you might come across an event on your travels, like some one being jacked for their horse or some prisoners escaping in which you can intervene, usually just by quickly shooting the offender, but they hardly do anything to break the boredom up between treks across the map from A to B.

I see people have been saying that these encounters make the world feel like its alive, that quickly passes when it happens repeatedly on your journeys. There is one where some woman flags you down to help her with her carriage, and when you stop you get jumped by bandits. First time it’s a bit of a surprise, after that its just repetitive second time I came across this event I just rode past and shot the woman in the head without even slowing down – why waste my time?

The hunting aspect is also pointless, it requires a fair bit of effort for no result – wow $2 for all that work. There are some crud mini games but again nothing that keeps you entertained for more than 30 seconds – if that! The multiplayer is also dross, like GTA it doesn’t matter what you do someone will just ride over and shoot you, again, and again and again and ruin your game until you leave.

It is a seriously hyped title as far as I am concerned, just not worthy of the accolade its received. I wish I bought ME2 instead

If you like GTA, perhaps.

Otherwise, no.

It's the same thing over and over again.
It's a huge map/world, and you only got a horse to travel.
And using the horse means constant button tapping to simulate the galloping.

Better get Bayonetta for less money :p
