starting problems

Post by SLOPPY »

just brought a rev 1 1990 glimited 3gse

car started no probs and while driving home sprang a water leak and had to pull over losing all coolent.
got recovered home and found it to be water pump outlet pipe had corroded and broke off so fitted another pump
again car started no problems while topping up coolent ..
then when about to start again turned key to start and nothing battery meter hit the floor and all lights went off except for the battery light .
about half n hour later went back to car and it started.
then again failed to start .
thinking this could be a starter motor prob i stuck it in 2nd and rocked it to and fro then gave the starter a thump with rubber mallet(lol)
it started without a problem
unfortunatly now my new 2 wont start even with a rock or a thump..
in need of some good advice starter motor was to my knowledge a good 2nd hand 1 as the last owner had starting probs and had it changed

sounds about right apart from the alarm i havent got the alarm connected.
but the relay sounds like something to try ...
carnt understand why my 2's acting up like this as it has started 3 times today with me messing and still failed afterwards.

yeah my problem was completly unrelated to the alarm in the end it was just summit i thought was the problem.

have u checked the connection at the relay, checked the earth for it

mine was starting ok most of the time but would play up a fair bit

in the end that poor connection gave up lol

looks like problem solved
2 lots of cable going on to starter motor not the thick main cable but the smaller cable and connecter..
pulled apart this connector and it was filthy black
cleaned it with some caliper cleaner and wd40..
car still wouldnt start properly so decided to leave it till this afternoon and try bypassing the relay in the boot
got up this morning to get off to work and tried it again and it started
hasnt played up since
will keep your relay fix in mind if it goes again but for now looks like a dirty switch was the problem

There's an intermittant fault on mine to do with the connection between the auto gearbox and the ignition. Car is not sensing that the gear lever is in the park position, so it will not start. Moving the gear selector out of park then back into park cures this.
I'll get round to fixing it properly when I get the time.
