[Mk2] [Generic] TEIN topmount knocking - How to fix?

Post by benGT »

I know there are plenty of threads out there about front end knocks and rattles but I have been unable to find a definitive answer!

Basically my Rev3 has little front end knocks which I always assumed was drop links (nothing majorly loud or anything), but in the last 2 days, the driver's side front has become very loud and I am certain it is the topmount.

I have TEIN type Flex coilovers and am wondering if any possible topmount repairs can be carried out on them? Things like bearings or something?

I wont be able to get the car in the air for a few days to confirm the noise but am starting my research now!

Can anybody help?! :thumleft:

First of all. Give the topmount a good coating of WD40 from the frunk. As if you haven't been regularly wetting it then there is a good chance it has dried up. Hence the knocking.

I used to get it on my old Starlet with D2 coilovers. A good coating in WD40 once a month kept them in good working, non-knocking order.

so what parts of the top mount would I be lubricating? Just trying to understand how they are made up so I know what could perish/wear/etc

That bit there, down the gap in the middle. You would be lubricating the bearing.

False alarm!

After finally jacking up the front and hanging off every suspension component I could get my hands on I found what appeared to be a tiny bit of movement in the lower joint of the driver's side droplink.

2 new Toyota Avensis droplinks later - no knocks from the suspension at all. Finally, knock free motoring (for now!)
