Remove sunroof - replace with sheet metal.

Post by Tomiam »

Im sure a few folks have done this for their MR2 race / track cars.
Next weekend Im going to be doing this to my own Mk2 Rev2 car and wouldnt mind if anyone can share any hints /tips before I start angle grinding through my roof.

As I understand the process:-
Remove sunroof and put it aside feeling good about the weight reduction & safety aspect.
From the inside of the car - drill out the spot welds holding the framework in place for the sunroof supports, which should just leave it 'glued' in place.
Remove all metal for sunroof supports as its shouldnt be welded in anymore.
Have a sheet of aluminium cut to size to fit over the gaping hole in the roof.
Silicone around the edge of the hole & rivet the new panel into place.

Any advice or feedback very welcomed. If you did it a different way, I would love to hear of your experience.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Mike.

That's more or less what I did. Additionally I used countersunk closed rivets (closed to prevent water ingress, countersunk to keep them flush with the panel) then covered the whole roof with vinyl both as an alternative to painting and to keep water out.

I thank you very much :)
At least knowing someone else has done it like this makes me approach the job with a bit more confidence :D

Vinyl over the roof, not a bad idea. Thankfully I run a sign manufacture / printing company so thats VERY easy to get!
