Possibly Selling 1991 Uk MR2 Coupe (68k on clock)

Post by toyotatoyota »

Hi All,
This is my 1st Toyota MR2 (which i have bought for my girlfriend). I have seen a few and turned them down for stupid things. This one came up on ebay and i had to have it. Really, Really wish i hadnt.

This is the link to the ebay item that i bought (stupidly and not through ebay):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3D1&_rdc=1

this is the item number if you want to check through the ebay site:
140397459056.

Everything that she has put is B.S.

I planned on sorting out a few things and letting my girlfriend use it as a cheap run around... But her 1st drive on her own resulted in the alarm going off on entry and the car immobilising itself for around 30minutes...

This is just a tester to see if i can get any money back on it at all, or if i should just cut my losses and take it to scrap yard. I am taking it to Jap Tech in Hull for a Oil and Filter change on saturday. This will decide if i should sell/scrap the car. If there is interest (and i decide to sell)i will email anyone pics and update any vague info. The car is located near HULL.

It is a Uk 1991 Coupe White (with a GT spoiler added). Around 67,900miles on the clock. With Mot's to prove. The last two MOT's have had no advisories, so it has a current MOT to next year. I hpi checked the car using autotrader and it came back green (fine). I also plan on going to Toyota on saturday and see if they can print off any of the previous service invoices. And i will get the MOT number so you can check on the Vosa the previous mots. 5 previous owners now i think.

The car has e/w, e/m but no ABS or Power Steering. Which i like.

Interior: Good condition, two cig burns on drivers seat. 2centimeter tear on passenger door card (2mm wide ish). The drivers door card lower light is cracked but works. Very little wear on the interior inc Steering Wheel. Gear knob and garter show signs of wear but not worse that i have seen. All the switches, lights etc work. Cd player, radio work. All gauges work. Temp stays in middle and Voltage is in the solid part of the scale. Heater blows out warm air once engine warms up. The right tweeter has air/wind noise coming through it. All speakers seem to work and the system sounds good. All light, washer, indicator stalks work. Also has the sunroof material shade. The Glass has no cracks and is (that i rember) colour coded blue tint to go with the interior.

Exterior: Ok. Two yellow rust bits on roof. Line of rust on at least one of the door bottoms (will have to check both). Possibly a few pin head speks of rust spots. Sills, well the passenger side has 1inch crush at back near arch and just before that is 10p sized rust point. I touched it, but wouldnt want to push it. Drivers sill is also rusty. Hard to explain, but if you looked in the drivers rear wheel space, toward the front of the arch there is metal missing/badly corroded (will take pics if selling). The Gt spoiler was originally red, and you can see a 10p size spot. The worst bit with the spoiler is that to stop rain getting under it has something like white seam sealer around it. Slight surface rust on both lips of arches. No rust showing through though. Under the car looks fine, but the rust has taking its toll on the under sill parts. Just bought a Mr2 rear badge as well. Paint work is good.

Engine/Gearbox: About the only reason i bought the car. I though the engine pulled very well considering its the 3s-f3. Gearbox is fine, slighlty sloppy gear change but not the worst one iv been in! Goes in and out of all gears fine. Clutch is fine, doesnt slip when you accelerate. Does require service, getting oil and filter changed on saturday. Starts 1st time*. Will check before selling but in the week i have had it no oils/lubricants have appeared on the floor.

Exhuast: Had blow just after cat. Took it to exhuast centre. They gobbed it up and put a new clamp on. They said that if it was to be done properly they would have to weld a new section. But it doesnt blow like it did (will check if selling).

Engine Bay: Whilst not spotless, its the best one i have seen on a car that is driven. The component that is on the underside of the engine cover isnt even that badly rusted.

Brakes: Spot on, no problems at all. Hand Break is fine.

Alloys: Good conditon with centre caps. Very slight kurbing on the rim near tyre. But the alloys themselves are very good condition.

Tyres: All good. Plenty of tread, no damage to the side walls.

Steering: Slight wobble at 80mph, but i got the front wheels rebalanced so will have to check. Slight pull to left on steering wheel.

Suspension: Doesnt seem to wobble all over the place. So i guess its ok. 3 Mots ago it got an advisory on all 4 springs. Couldnt tell you if they have been changed or not. But it feels firm and the pot holes that you dont spot hurt.

Lights: All work, pop ups fine.

Aerial: Not sure if the coupe and gt have different aerials. But this one is snapped inside. And the motor just whines. So i disconected it and i have clamped the aerial parts together. The radio works fine now;) (i planned on putting an aerial around the boot and removing the external one completly).

Alarm /Central Locking/ Door Locks*
1. Master Key opens both doors from passenger side, only the drivers door from drivers side. Only locks the doors seperatly. However the inside door lock button-locks both door and un-locks them fine.
Which leads to the only time it hasnt started, which was my girlfriends 1st outing on her own. It alarmed and immobilised the car. We left it went home, read up on the forums and went back. It unlocked and started no fuss.

Driving: Intermittant high pitched noise which comes on/off, on/off, on etc. Speed, road condition doesnt seem to set it off or stop it. Sounds like from drivers side. Not sure on this, but will check up if selling. I think when manovering/parking there is a knocking noise coming from the front.

Sum Up:
Has the master key (also an additional one i got cut this week), books, mots and clean hpi. Under 70k on clock with good engine/gearbox and interior. But the list of things i need to do is now to big (its the immobilising thing thats really put me off). So i am just seeing what the interest is. I stupidly paid £900. Id like (obviously) as much as possible, but not keeping my hopes up. If its going to be £200 odd quid i would rather not have the hassle and take it to scrap yard.

Sorry this is a long one, but id rather tell the truth then B.S someone.
This is an unfortunate 1st Toyota experience.

I have taxed it for 6months, but would like £90 for this. I also have a new air filter from camskill in the packaging, which if sold the buyer can have for £5.

Thankyou for your time reading this - Will add my own pics if selling (inc all the bad parts mentioned)
Daniel

P.s The car is not for sale yet. I am just interested to see if anyone is willing to pay for it. Or if the scrap man can have it.

doesnt sound like much is wrong (but i didnt read all of it - sorry) cant understand if you say someone was going to give you £200 you'd scrap it - what would they give? scap value would be £150, or maybe you mean sell it to someone to break (theres a few on here  ) why spend mre money on it by getting it serviced if you are unsure, id make a decision on that beofre you potentially lose more money on it. having said that id keep it and sort the niggles there cannot be many h plates with that mileage on it still around

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I will have a good look at it this weekend. Taking it for the oil and filter change becuase the owner said he would take it out for a road test and let me know what he thinks the problem noise's are. I will attempt to sort the niggles out. But if i cant i will put it up for sale.

Thankyou

Went to Jap Tech on saturday. Was told/shown it needed new n/s strut top, o/s rear ball joint and at least o/s rear brakes stripping and cleaning. Thankfully my cousin disconnected the alarm and immobiliser. My girlfriend like's the car, so we will keep it for now and sort the niggles. Thankyou for your replies.

Hopefully this should sort the problems. Then just need to keep on top of the rust and sort out the other bits. Should be a good 1st MR2 for her.

I hope she's got a trader's licence. Looking at the number of cars she's flogging (and what a load of rubbish about each one!) I bet HMRC would be very, very interested ;)

At the end of the day i didnt have to buy it... However it was nothing like described. Hopefully Karma exists... Something that has just started happening is that only when you 1st start, it idles around 1,500rpm for a few minutes before settling back to 800rpm or so. Do i just need to remove the Idle Start Control Valve and give it a good blast with carb cleaner?

thats not far from normal chap on a cold day. i would crack on with the maintenance, get the sparks, filters and fluids changed correctly. Maybe even the dizzy and rotor arm just to make sure shes firing cleanly and as long as the engines in good nick you should find this lasts you a good long time.

suspension parts do wear on these cars as theyre a few years old and once theyre replaced and your happy you wont be changing anything for a little while get the geometry done (4wheel alignment) as these cars are very sencitive to their settings. tyre wear and grip can be effected quite a lot if the geometry is out.

oh and last thing, you may want to find out what the deal is on your insurence having dropped the imobiliser from the car. or at least install something that functions correctly. insurence companies can be an ar$e if you dont keep on top of things :thumleft:

Thanks for that ;) temperature has dropped outside and it just seems to have started, so hopefully its the cold start high tick-over. If the new strut top and lower ball joint sort out the suspension problems i will get the alignment done. Got a over steering wheel disc lock, will check insurance docs.

How the heck did it pass the mot, especially with no advisories? Are those the contacts she mentions?
Did you view the car before buying? Even if not, you didn't have to go through with it. If the descriptions inaccurate, pull out or haggle.
