TRD (Recaro?) Seat Overhaul/Repair Questions...

Post by JeffD »

Just acquired myself a TRD seat which I believe is actually manufactured by recaro. Absolutely delighted with it but just looking for a few suggestions about smartening it up (it doesnt need a full recover and I dont actually want to do that as I want it kept original).

The seat...

Image

First problem is the "TRD" logo at the top is a mixture of 2 colours - cant decide whether it should be all light and some of its dirty or all dark and some of its faded??? Can a logo be resown without stripping the seat apart?

Image

Unfortunatel the seat adjsutment wheel was broken in transit so I have to use a 9mm spanner to adjust the rake of the back :-( Does anyone know if you can buy recaro spares from anywahere or a way of repairing the existing wheel - just wondering whether I could use some fibreglass resin or something....?

Image

Theres a couple of small blemises in the centre material - just wndering whether anyone has used any of those fabric repoair kits with any sucess as the rest of it is like new - dont realy want to recover a whole seat for sake of these minor blemises.

Image

The brackets that came with it are off a JZX100 I believe and all marked with a 25 followed by a letter eg. 25A, 25B etc etc. Ive been told The SW20 MR2 ones are marked with an 18 folowed by an A, B, C etc and Ive actually read these charts somewhere on the net but now cant find it again - been all over the TRD conline catlogues but just cant find it - if anyone knows the correct reference numbers it would be much appreciated! ALternatively can anyone suggest where I can have brackets made/maybe modify my own.

Finally, I think I'd like to recover my suede doorcard inserts with the same material as the centre of the seats - does anyone have experience of a place matching a material for you?

Buy some JB Weld (on EBay for less than £10 inc p&p). The stuff is great and will bond the broken plastic to the metal.

Right just bought some of the weld which I think will do plastic too (as opposed to the metakl one).

Its actually only yhe plastic part that is broken and it was fitted round the metal but not bonded to it - I'll give it a go but TBH Ive not had much joy repairing my foglight holes in the past using chemical metal type putty of a similar nature. Cheers for tip though :-)

Heres the wheel back in place - you can see how much of the original mechanisem has broken off

Jeff,

From past experience I can tell you that it's worth paying few quid more for a decent product. JB Weld has "fixed" things where Chemical Metal failed at the first hurdle.

Good luck!

I'm just waiting for some to be delivered - Ill glue a few of the broken bits together first and see what I think before gluing to wheel on chair.

Just as an aside whilst making enquiries I cane across a place that sells Recaro spare parts - worth knowing about :-)

LOL - glad you pointed it out rather than me ;-') Never mind....

Not 100% clear but if you have a look here you can see the "TRD" is all one colour and if you could see my seat close up youd realise if it is meant to be like that it wasnt a very good idea at all! LOL

Little progress update....

I bought one of those "smart repair" kits to try and fix the holes in my seat

The holes i want to fix...

Image

Image

One smart repair kit off ebay for £11

Image

Lots of colours are supplied but I just used black and white which you out in a tub with a ball bearing in and shake to mix up

Image

Image

Double check colour against seat and add more black/white as neccessary

Image

Fill the holes with glue

Image

Add the fibres over the hole and using a piece of gauze they supply (not pictured) press the fibres down into the glue

After its dried just vacuum off excess

Image

I used a pencil to to try and reinstate the holes

Image

Not perfect but I hope youll agree its a big improvement :-)

And the broken adjuster wheel...

Taped up behind the wheel to so I dont glue it to the chair

Image

Glued what was left of the wheel to what was left of the surround

Image

Tape held it in place whilst it dried

Image

Using JB weld putty I filled up the remainder of the whole making it cobvered the centre portion/remanants of wheel and cover

Image

Once dry I popped the central cover back and it works!!! Hope it holds up - it seems solid enough :-)
