[All] [Generic] blueprinting my engine?

Post by lewis88 »

I just phone my engineering shop to find out what they will need to balance and lighten my crank, flywheel and clutch, conrods and pistons.
they have told me they can use my current clutch but when that goes and i put another one on the engine will be out of balance again. how much will the clutch wear effect the balance of all this? im having doubts about having it done now because they say everytime i have a new clutch it will have to be rebalanced and they will need all the parts on their desk over again! if its just a matter of it wont be 100% perfect again i will go ahead with the blueprinting.

when the clutch dies i say take fly wheel off (but mark the pos.of it on the crank) then take flywheel and new clutch to be balanced.
so the new clutch will match the flywheel and you know the fly wheel matches the crank :thumleft:HTH

Would they need to balance the clutch plate itself? I would have expected them to do all the balancing work using the clutch cover as this is the bit that rotates with the flywheel.

Then when you need to swap your clutch you just change the clutch plate, and so no need to rebalance everything?

EDIT: I guess you are talking about when you have to replace the clutch cover as well, so the above suggestion would work (ie getting flywheel and new clutch plate rebalanced together) #-o

yeah mate, bang on! they balance the pistons, conrods, crank, crank pulley, flywheel and clutchplate all in one go. i just missunderstood what part of the clutch gets machining.

Thats one way to balance, the other way is to do it all individually, that way you only need to get the changed part balanced.

ive asked them about that, but they have said the only way they do it is all together :? is this because it saves time?

If you're balancing the crank I think you need the pistons/rods as well to take into account their weights?

Likewise if you do the flywheel and crank seperately you may get each balanced within a certain tolerance on their own, but when you bolt them together you could end up with a cumulative imbalance in the resulting total mass.

I'm guessing though... :-k

yeah im having the pistons and conrods all lightened and made equal weights. i just want the engineering shop to lighten each part on its own incase of failure in the future. I will see what they have to say monday. ive just ordered a alloy crank pulley to keep weight down to :)

The stock pistons, rods and crank are all very well balanced as they come from Toyota and there is nothing to lighten on the rods or pistons without making them weaker, not a good thing to do.

The right way to balance the crank, flywheel and clutch is crank first, then bolt the flywheel on and balance that, then add the clutch and balance that.
Doing it this way each is balanced and changing the clutch or flywheel will make no changes the the crank.

It sounds to me that the engineering company you want to use do not know the right way to do things.
