Need some help with engine error codes

Post by bluesmoke »

Hi folks.

Got my loom in place, gone to start the car and found I've got no spark. I've also got a bunch of error codes and some warning lights, including the battery light being on. The standard turbo gauge on the dash goes up to the top as well when I'm trying to start it.

Error codes and what I think they mean, but I'm not totally sure:
35 Turbo pressure meter
22 water temp sensor signal
41 Throttle position sensor signal: open or short in tps signal; tps sensor; tps signal/circuit; ECU
24 No idea
32 no idea

Help guys, so close but yet still so far :(

See http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/ ... system.htm

Then click Diagnosis System, then scroll down to the 4th page (numbered FI-28 )

22: Water temp sensor signal
24: Intake air temp sensor signal
32: AFM signal
35: Turbo pressure sensor signal
41: Throttle position sensor signal

Also on the above link is a section called "Troubleshooting with Volt/Ohmmeter" - check the appropriate pages in there.

For what it's worth, the water temp sensor is on the coolant neck next to the distributor, on the side facing the cabin. The intake air temp sensor is inside the AFM, the turbo pressure sensor is on the rear bulkhead next to the diagnosis port and then TPS is on the side of the throttle body.

However having seen the reply in this thread: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... 98#1128398

It's easy to see why you are getting most of those errors!

Not sure what you mean by that? Everything is properly wired up. There's two plugs unconnected, which appear to relate to things my car doesn't have, one of them being ABS.

Hopefully in a couple of days I will have a replacement ECU.

Just wanted to check in the meantime if there's anything else I should consider/look at?

Does the ECU have anything to do with the coil and igniter generating a spark or should I expect these to have burned out too seeing as it's not sparking still?

What I meant by that was, most of the errors you were listing in this thread were related to items you had yet to plug in on the other thread. Have you cleared the ECU codes since plugging those plugs in? It will remember the codes until you reset the ECU, even if the fault has since been fixed.

ECU does control spark, IGT and IGF lines connect to igniter.

Ah OK I get you.

What's happened is I didn't get the errors or the lights, with the previous loom in. The car was switched off, loom changed over, and then attempted to start up with the new loom. This is when I got the codes and dash lights. Tried again and got the same.

So, I am worried that a number of things may have burned out. If I'm lucky it could just be the ECU. If not perhaps I need a coil and igniter and maybe some sensors?

One thing I have had trouble with is the alternator cable which goes on the threaded bolt. The cable has a ring on the end with two prongs, and I have only been able to get the connector on with the prongs facing upwards, which I'm guessing is incorrect. It doesn't seem possible to turn it over though, the cable, as it comes down the sid eof the bay, is very rigid. But I'm wondering if this is having an effect ont he battery light?

Could be an earthing problem possibly? If all of those sensors share an earth which is not properly secured that would probably throw an error.
