Identifying 5 or 6 speed.

Post by Gasdiver »

My 2003 SMT gearbox is 6 speed and broken.
I have found another SMT gearbox in a breakers from another 03 plate MR2. The gearbox is out of the vehicle and on the shelf.
I am aware that not all SMT gearboxes were 6 speed.
Problem is how do I identify whether the one in the breakers is 5 or 6 speed.

My local Toyota agent is a reluctant to help here (fair enough really).

The breakers have been very helpful, but have said can I help them identify what we need to look at.

Help!!

IIRC everything post '02 was six speed? Try giving Patrick at Rogue a call he's the expert.

OK Rogue where really helpful, the box's changed from 5 speed to 6 speed during 2002.

Now I need to identify whether the box in the breakers is a 2002 manufacture (hence 5 speed) or a genuine 2003 model.

As far as I remember, the 6 speed box is slightly longer and heavier than the 5 speed.
