Just got a rev 2

Post by How_high »

Hey all This is my rev2 turbo (JDM)

Im new to mr2's and taking it easy but havin fun

Its still restricted it has done 103,000km

It has the following known modifications:-

Manual boost controller
fuel cut eliminator
Pioneer head unit dvd/cd, touchscreen
Kicker 6x9 speakers
Custom wolfrace exhaust
17" Wolfrace asia alloys (dunno model)
Apexi induction Kit
Blitz Blow off valve
Racing clutch unknown brand
Steel head gasket
Quickshift
Gear knob and gaiter (gaiter pretty naff)
HID head lamps
Turbo timer

I have a few questions too as im a total newbie to turbo's would be great if they could be answered.
At the moment i am running the boost at 1.5bar is that safe or will it just reduce the life time of the engine?
When starting the car i was told that you should wait till the engine heats up before you start using the turbo. . . So i take it you should just drive in low revs till the engine is heated or should you leave the car to sit and idle untill engine heats up? (i alwasy thught that was a no no with all cars)

Here is a few pics of the car

1.5 bar is not safe mate, i'm surprised it lasted the journey home!!!!!!

set it to 1bar, or if your gauge is in PSI, set it to 14psi( a bar) :thumleft:

can't see how the stock intercooler would cope with that?? :-k

Welcome mate, nice looking car you have. Hope you find the site useful and the people friendly. What plans do you have for the car and any issues you've noticed?

set it to no more than 14, you might get away with it since it has an uprated head gasket :)

15psi should be ok with your current setup, but your injectors will be pretty much working at their max and im not sure how long a standard ct26 turbo can cope with that kind of boost.

Yeah just drive in low revs, gentle acceleration until the needle is about half way up the temp gauge. The same is true for cooling down, its better to drive the last few miles of your journey sedately off boost, than it is to sit in the car stationary with the engine running at the end of a hard blast.

Cheers mike thats actually how i have been driving which is pretty good

As for any problems with the car, in the whole evrything is ok its in really good condition. I have seemed to have sprung an oil leak its very little and i aint to sure where it is coming from #-o

As plans for my car go goin to get a set of coilovers in a couple of months either tein or bc not to sure yet.

As for other mods i aint to sure yet, where would you go from here?
Would it be better to plant a rev 3 + engine in or take some rev 3 bits such as map sensor so i can run higher boost with an engine rebuild with existing engine ](*,)

welcome to the site mate, cars looking clean, be alot easier to keep your current engine, just change the gasket if your wanting to run any higher boost :eye:

it has a steel head gasket, what kind of boost could you run with that?? assuming you had bigger injectors and maybe turbo???

sorry to the OP for slight hijack but you'll prob be better off knowing this too :thumleft:

Be able to have a fairly safe 300-320, some have pushed it higher but the ringlands have given way, anything higher than 320 Imo would be best to have forgies in place

On a bigger turbo you can get to these power levels on very little boost, 10-12 psi on a garrett gt30 for example :eye:

1.1 bar is about max for a rev 2, this is on the borderline of the limitiations of the AFM calculating fuel. i wouldnt push a standard turbo that much though imo . the standard turbo (turbine side) are ceramic and what can happen when you run increased boost is the ceramic turbine gets movement and can make contacts with the turbo housing ! they can shatter ! steel head gasket is a bonus though :thumleft:
i run 1 bar on a steel head gasket but i have a hybrid ct26 . no ceramic turbines , so its going to cope with higher boost more than a standard ct26 turbo .
just my opinion but i wouldnt run more than 0.9 boost on a rev 2 standard turbo, if you want it to last :thumleft:

psi bar

1.00 0.07
2.00 0.14
3.00 0.21
4.00 0.28
5.00 0.34
6.00 0.41
7.00 0.48
8.00 0.55
9.00 0.62
10.00 0.69 standard boost
11.00 0.76
12.00 0.83
13.00 0.90
14.00 0.97
15.00 1.03
16.00 1.10

i assume this would be with bigger injectors??? 100% duty on standard rev2 ones surely wouldn't make 320 bhp???
sorry if that sounds cheeky, it's not meant to be, just wonderingwhat kind of power i can get :thumleft:

According to the Fensport website 1.2bar is about the limit with standard 440cc injectors which fits in with the 16/17psi that most people quote around here.
