i paid around that but i paid it nearly 3 years ago

edit if you look in the system details you can see your ps3 number and mine is number 896.

Still going strong and it is used every day for gaming or for watching hd programmes/blu rays

As far as I can see these console failures are really a luck thing. I only know one person that's had an xbox 360 rrod, and I can think of at least 10 of my mates that have them. I've had 2 360s, the first one was a release day one that I queued up for, and that's still working fine. The other guy who queued up with me to buy one, his also still works fine. My current one is a brand new one (lower power usage, HDMI output etc) and I doubt it'll ever fail. The only guy I know who's had one die it was one of the newer ones though :-k

I've had a PS2 fail like H3RB described, 3 days playing it almost solid and it just locked up and never worked again. I only know 3 guys with PS3s but one of them died a week ago, no error lights or anything but it won't start up, no video or audio output.

It really just seems to be luck of the draw... If I had an electronic appliance that costs that much just die, I'd be pretty pi$$ed though.

Every single person I know bar one, is on their 2nd/3rd/4th 360.

Don't know of anyone with a knackered PS3. Not to say it doesn't happen though. But anyway, it's a poor show of Sony to charge for repairs.

And an even poorer show of Microsoft to release such an ill-designed (reliability wise) console.

The big problem, so i'm told is unleaded solder, this would not have been an issue on a PS2. Unleaded solder is less flexible and less resistant to vibration than the old leaded solder.

That makes sense. I still have a big old reel of leaded solder that I use, it's good stuff :)

Well it seems the fix for the RROD death is so easy people could, if they'd known, still be on their first consoles. I recently gave my dead one to colleague at work as "if you can fix it, you can have it"
He's been playing it all weekend :thumleft:
