As far as I can see these console failures are really a luck thing.

I only know one person that's had an xbox 360 rrod, and I can think of at least 10 of my mates that have them.

I've had 2 360s, the first one was a release day one that I queued up for, and that's still working fine.

The other guy who queued up with me to buy one, his also still works fine.

My current one is a brand new one

(lower power usage, HDMI output etc) and I doubt it'll ever fail.

The only guy I know who's had one die it was one of the newer ones though

I've had a PS2 fail like H3RB described, 3 days playing it almost solid and it just locked up and never worked again.

I only know 3 guys with PS3s but one of them died a week ago, no error lights or anything but it won't start up, no video or audio output.

It really just seems to be luck of the draw.

If I had an electronic appliance that costs that much just die, I'd be pretty pi$$ed though.
