Anyone know this 2?

Post by easty-5 »

Hi folks, new around here :)

Anyway, looking at getting my first MR2 and I came across this: -

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1227221.htm

I have to say, it looks fantastic (IMO), is pretty well specced, low milage and the engine is unfettled with and running standard boost so a great platform to work from. Only slightly off putting thing is it seems too cheap for what it is, but the seller told me he is selling for a quick sale so he can fund an engine rebuild on his drag MR2. He is an MR2 specialist apparently and he bought this for his run around.

Is there anything in particular I should look out for when viewing (and probably buying as I will be travelling from Aberdeen). Has anybody any experience with this car or know anything about it?

All advice, comments, info etc will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jamie :)

hi, welcome to imoc
dont know the car but the trader in question is unfortunately banned from this forum, i beleive he is around on others though
doesnt look like a rev 5 to me, or even a rev 4
could be wrong but i thought airbags where standard rev4 onwards

Ah okay,

can you enlighten me as to why he is banned? It's on an R reg so surely it must be a Rev 4/5 unless the number plates are illegal?

Cheers,
Jamie

i wouldnt quite say illegal, cars are often wrongfully registered as the year of import and not year of manufacture (have seen a rev1 on p reg)
ask for the chassis number - this will give you a rough guide to year of manufacture

agree with others, that could be anything from a late 93 to late 96 car.....
doesnt look like a rev4 or rev5 turbo to me either.

(purely going by the no passenger airbag)

saying that, the car does look really aggressive, and i love the colour, and for 4k, i think is a good buy.
(if the engine checks out ok)

Was there not an issue a couple of months ago with that seller, buying a car with a known foobared engine, then retailing it as being in good condition?

Well that is defo not a rev 4 or 5 - no pass airbag and i don't think you can see the red stitching on the gear knob, obv this could have been changed.

Unless the dash has been replaced i can't see why he is advertising it as a Rev 5.

Maybe this is one of the reason's he was banned - selling stuff that aint what they're described to be!

As long as it is Rev 3+ then I am not too bothered what rev it is. Is there anything specific to look out for engine wise on MR2's?

There is some info in the knowledge base regarding tip to look for a various tests to do.

Personally though if he continues to try and pull it off as a Rev 5 i wouldn't go with the car cause it would make me wonder how many other things he is hiding. It's up to you though of course - good luck finding one and when you do, get us some pictures up :thumleft:

Yea I have asked him about the airbag etc. Will see what he comes back with. I think he is just assuming it is a Rev 5 due to it being an R reg.

I hope to buy either this one or the black GTS with gold Advans in the classified section :)

If he is a so called 'MR2 Specialist' then he should know how to tell a Rev 3 from a Rev 5.

Banned seller on the forums i would be steering well clear of this one.

Just for a quick easy one, ask him to send you a pic of the date on the seatbelt tag, or preferably the chassis number to be certain.
