Audi TT and R34GTR
Twin exhaust TT about a 2004 model. Tried to monster my R34GTR on a dual carriageway up to a motorway. Stayed with me in 1st and the start of 2nd (a weak point on the GTR I've always thought) but by the time I got into third he seemed to be standing still. Have TTs got crap mid-range I wonder?
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
Twin exhausts would either be a 4 cylinder 20v turbo with 225bhp or the 3.2 V6 with 255bhp. Both have similar power to weight. Neither are particularly quick. I've been out in a 225, it was nice, it accelerated smoothly. I didnt notice a lack of midrange, however it wasnt particularly quick any where through the gears.
They are actually really nice cars to be in and, IMO, look at though.
I'd certainly consider one.

Wouldnt call them slow, but shouldnt be a match for any GTR really. They can get near 300bhp with a remap though.
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
It's the same VAG 20v turbo engine VW put in all their cars with varying power.
They just fit different turbo's with different maps depending on the power they want.

Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
The higher power 1.8 turbos have quite a few differences including twin intercoolers and a simple remap gives about 260/270 bhp.The V6 cars are not really any faster than 225's due to the extra weight.
I have one of the (on paper) fastest models of the mk1 TT range, the 05/06 Quattro Sport, rated at 240ps and lightened (back seats removed ,etc). Not super quick but fast enough for most situations, good torque and easy to get 35+ mpg.

(Don't take any notice of what this idiot says about the seats, they are Recaro Pole Position and great. )

Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
I was a bit shocked tbh, have had repmobiles do better!
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
What power do you think you are running at the moment,Toni?
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
totally different league (performance wise) and type of cars. don't see why your shocked.
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
These little games don't mean much.He probably started off fast and if you had let him go he can say to his mates 'I beat a Skyline'....but as soon as he realised you were going for it he (wisely) backed off.

Would you recommend a TT as a reliable, day to day useable car?
I've long since admired the TT & 350Z roadsters.

TT's are a good bet, although they do have their mid-life issues, have a look at the TT forum, plenty of info and an active site.
The 350z is a more sporty drive and faster, although a simple remapped healthy 225 would be close. The TT has more solid build, better interior and far better fuel consumption.
Also,of course, the 350 has a masculine image and feel to it,the TT is softer and feels more ordinary to drive,if these things matter to you.
They are both good cars, and some TT's are highly modded just like some mk2 turbos, there are a lot of aftermarket bits available.

Stage 1 (intake and exhaust plus 1bar ECU) so around 400bhp. Yes I know it's in a different performance league, I just couldn't believe how much.

...a good explanation!

Just to put it into perspective Toni, my tubby destroyed my mates Escort Cosworth by 2+ seconds 5 times in a row at Santa pod one year. Escort Cossies are generally quicker than Audi TT's and I'd say your Skyline would be quicker than my tubby was
I really like the TT's but I wouldnt expect anything other than humilliation from a Skyline. Even a standard one.

Simple remap will not get you 300 on a TT.
300bhp on a 225, needing a hybrid turbo and a uprated manifold as a minimum.
Ran one for a year and with a remap was sitting at 265bhp, good cars and with some sensible mods can be made to be very good cars
http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/ great site with invaluable info.
Make sure the timing belt and water pump has been done, ARBs prone to going at the front and also make sure all the gauges work on the dash pod, if not they will get replaced FOC by Audi

Are the turbo's on them unique to VAG engines, like our CT's are unique to Toyota engines? Or are they standard fitment Garret or similar?

I always thought they were unique to the VAGs but could be wrong.
Another great resource http://www.wak-tt.com/links/links.htm Wak is one of the major gurus and his how to guides are great.
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
Spot on with the remap figures there matey.
http://www.more-bhp.com/tt/audi-tt-18t-225-remap.html
Have to say, £200 for 40bhp with a simple mapping is a good VFM mod IMO.
The bluefin as a comparison for the Focus ST takes power from 225 to about 280 bhp but costs £600 IIRC.

Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
The increase in mpg makes it worth while alone, I saw a marked increase in mine.
Re: Audi TT and R34GTR
Turbo kits are less VFM

Over £3k and it's only a GT28 series
