Just had sump off, think bearings are officially dead!!

again, sorry for photo quality, but think you will get the idea!

basically, i'm guessin due to oil pump failing, the bearings have ran dry as a bone, gonna whip mains off aswell which'll no doubt be goosed also!

as you can see, they have turned a nice reddish colour & also distorted due to the heat:

can't see very well, but due to the wear on them, the metal shavings have plugged up the oil hole in the bearing & also in the recess at the end.

looks like it's gonna be another fun job for the car, startin to hate it more & more now! ](*,)

Just like mine fella

Mine was due to a warped head gasket from a previous owner.

Being fixed as we speak though

hi
dont think that the colour is because of heat- looks like they have worn through to the copper being a two metal bearing. picture not clear though so i could be wrong.

Can not see pic's very well.

Was there a silver layer in the oil / sump?

If so you killed off all the soft metal as suggested in the last post, in that case I would also be checking your crank for damage.

Cheers

as lodgeman said, they appear to have worn down a lot, but due to the heat & severe wear, they have bent/deformed to a totally different radious & obvioulsy sit nowhere near the bearing caps!

oil was drained aaaaaaaaaaaaages ago but no recolection of metalic layers on top of it. crank is gonna be removed & inspected anyway, expecting mains bearings to be dead also. on first quick inspection, crank *looks* ok, but obviously i'm gonna measure them for size/ovality/taper & inspect for general surface finish of them. it's just the long & expensive road of fixing it *again* now ](*,)
