my cheap project *Apexi exhaust update*

Post by leeandjude »

well i thought it was about time i properly introduced myself!
Im Lee and i live near Sunderland. About 6 weeks ago i bought a cheap mr2 that was advertised on a local forum for 300 pounds with no tax and test...after a bit of haggling i got it down to 230 pounds! :D
When i got it it looked a mess, filthy, no working electrics on most things as he had removed every fuse in the front frunk which explained why he sold it...he thought it had a head gasket problem but it didnt as he had removed the fuse for the front radiator causing it too overheat in traffic (the plank), all trim painted red from rattle cans (why red on a blue car!) matt black wheels and have i mentioned filthy? oh plus a smallish dent on nearside rear wing (covered in black tape  )
looked like this:

so first thing was to put it in for an MOT...and it failed only on handbrake cable, headlamp alignment and one back bulb! :D cost me 30 quid for the MOT and 35 quid for the defects.
now the idea was to do this on the very cheap to prove a point plus whats the point of putting 600 quid wheels on a 230 quid car!
so i started the refurb...wheels down first, cleaned, sanded, primed and rattle can'ed.
from this:

to this:

then plastic interior the same and rebuilt...also fixing the speedo!

Image

the steering wheel was a mess...the last owner with his black tape fetish! had wrapped it all round the outside so when i pulled it all off, it took all the leather off leaving looking whiteish/grey...so that was repainted in new vinyl paint

Image

engine cleaned up the best i could:

Image

polished and clay bar'ed the car, now looked like this:

but i now wanted a better exhaust, bigger wheels and get rid off the standard steering wheel...you know how these things start snow balling! but how to do it cheap? this is how:
I saw another MR2 for sale in Derby that was an unfinished project with all the bits i wanted...bit of haggling again got it down to 300 quid with 6 months tax and test. It had a broke gearbox with no fifth or reverse gear (which was fun driving it back 160 miles!) but came with a spare box to fit.
drove down in the Shogun to pick it up...lovely chap and he filled the shogun to the roof with spare parts too. This is it:

Image
Image

got it home and started the transfer of parts to mine....16" wheels (nissan ones i know!) steering wheel and all trim switched over and all electrics switched over too. swapped the X brace over to the engine bay as well. so it now looks like this:

Image
Image
Image

to go on yet is the Apexi exhaust to swap over on Tuesday and i have just bought a TRD horn button off a member on here.
now...the best bit is the breakdown of costs.
car = 230
mot + defects= 65
tax = 101
rattle cans etc = 22
total so far = 418!! :D
The donor car cost me 300 plus 50 quid for fuel.... but i have already sold it on with all my standard stuff on (kit staying on too) for 350 on another forum, guy has already paid for it. so.....
exhaust, wheels, steering wheel and interior etc = FREE
TRD logos where free as i said the amp and sub that came with the donor car for 40 quid so paid with that, just sold a spare set of rev1 alloys that came with the donor car for 24 quid as well. I still have tons of stuff to sell too so more stuff to buy yet.
So the car still cost me 418 quid...car plus tax and test....YIPPEE
I will add more pics as i go but all mods have to bee cheap or free!
It will never be a show car but what else can you drive for that money! :D
thanks for reading.....lee

Looks like a good project :thumleft:

Did it come with that private plate as well? You could probably sell that and make all your money back... :D

well thats what i thought! the plate looks good but i dont think its a private one though. to be honest if it was a private plate i would put it on the Impreza cos it suits it...ie J6 PRA could mean JAP RA as my car is an STI RA.
Ithink it makes the car look a bit better in a way too.

Definately a private plate mate, will cost you £80 to transfer it to the scooby through dvla and the mr2's origional plate will be issued back to it at no cost.

You need to put the plate onto a retention certificate, this costs £25, once thats done your car will be issued with the origional plate and its down to you to get the plates for the car made up, you cant sell the plate unless its on a retention certificate.
What places have offered you £500? Are you sure it isnt just a company like reg transfers etc offering to sell the plate for you, and you get £500 for it if and when they sell it?
Another possible bonus would be that when you get the origional plate back on the car, it might be a K reg

Lol :thumleft:

Gotta be the cheapest MR2 on the site! Some people sell cars without eve realising they have private plates. A mate of mine bought a knackered old motorbike for £80 and sold the plate for nearly a grand :o

cant remember the names of the places (i have them in my email folder) but both of them didnt want any money of me. one looked a bit dodgier than the other but one did offer to buy it outright. anything i should look out for or does anyone recommend a company to try?

I'm fairly sure if you put it on a retention then you can sell it on eBay... :-k

Im going to start this thread first of all by thanking masha and casey for letting me take over his workshop for a day, and for trusting me with all his lovely selection of spanners etc. It is REALLY appreciated. :D

What im about to tell you was all done by me...thats the grinding, smoothing, measuring etc. I have never done this before so was fun and dangerous! :) Although casey did point me in the right direction when i asked for some help, but i did all the manual labour (and my arms and forehead hurt where the sparks hit 'em)

Anyway...arrived there first thing this morning (had left the donor MR2 there yesterday evening) and set about swapping over the exhausts on the 2 cars. this wasnt a straight swap as the Apexi system was welded to the donor car, this was done as Apexi dont do a system for a N/A MR2, just the turbo version.

So first thing was got the Apexi backbox of the donor car. Put the car on the lift and sliced it off with the angle grinder and put it on the floor:

Image

took the car off the ramp (feck me it was loud without an exhaust!) and then put my MR2 on, out with the angle grinder and cut the standard exhaust off as the flanges was a lump of of crud, tried every tool on it and it was too corroded:

Image
Image
Image

layed the standard one on the floor and cut the knackered flange off:

Image

which left this:

Image

I then ordered a length of exhaust at 57 bore and started to make all the connectors for both cars. the yellow stuff is just sealer to make sure it was airtight:

Image
Image

also when it was up i grinded off the exhaust grill. Once i had the exhaust on i made up some new connectors and put the standard exhaust on the donor car:

Image

The result? well the car sounds amazing and looks 110% better at the back. what do you reckon? another free upgrade!

Image

For someone who didnt have a feckin clue how to even use a grinder this morning i did well! both exhausts dont leak and are solid not loose. whats next?????

again thanks masha :)
