Handbrake problem??

Post by wonga121 »

hi guys, the handbrake in my rev3 is absolutely not working..
I need to put it all way up (nearly 90o vertically….)
and it will still slide when I park it on a very small angle
can anyone tell me wts the problem of my 2 and how much will it cost to repair it?
Many thx

You have 2 handbrake cables going to each of the rear wheels... often the cables seize.. and thus creates a large amount of slack in the front cable as there is no cable movement... which is the one you pull on with the handbrake.

Possible problems in the caliper being seized in the sliders too... pull off caliper, check, clean, grease....

The caliper end may also be maladjusted.. where the cable meets the caliper.. the mechanism maybe in the "handbrake on" position where its designed to protrude the piston towards the disc applying clamping force.

Check the calipers first... should be able to get a socket on the handbrake mechanism to aggrivate it working again ( spring loaded section )... if it doesn't budge.... resistance from the cable... disconnect the cable and see if it will then work.

Caliper fine, change the cable.

If your problem is seized handbrake cables, I replaced mine today. Bit of a fiddle underneath the car but it all worked out OK and I can now park and be sure it won't run away !
Got a couple of QH cables with brackets from my local factor for £52, and used the link guide below. If you have a few tools (Metric) you can do it.

before you change the cables, which is recommended anyway, get under the car and remove the centre trim. adjust the two nuts until you get more bite/less play on the handbrake, and this may work. 9 times out of 10 though the cables are shot as mentioned. Easy change, done this the other day too, 30 mins each side.

by the way, if ur handbrake freezes in winter, then theyre definitely shot.

Is it best to replace both sides whilst i am am doing the job?
Also where is the cheapest place to buy them?

Definitely ....... Most of the time is taken taking off and replacing the undertrays, so you don't want to do it again when the other side fails.
Furthermore, you're more likely to obtain equal action on both sides if the 2 cables are new. :)

replace it with a recon unit. you could 'free' it but it will eventually go again.
on an exchange basis you're looking at about £80.
