Okay i just rang adrian flux who quoted me £6000 unless i get a thatcham 1 alarm ( i have a toad?!) in which case they will insure me for £1900..

I called sky insurance they wouldnt actually give me any quote.

I thought these guys were meant to do cheap insurance for mature drivers?my admiral renewal i only 800 or so fully comp.

Im 29 with 6 years ncb no criminal offences. No motoring points or convictions ever.

People laughed at me on another forum and said that admiral would be miles more than a specialist.

I was under the impression that after 15 years cars could be classofied as a classic with some companys the guy at sky said yes then i told him it was an mr2 imporr and laughed as he said that wouldnt count as a classic?

Anyone got any tips where else i should be looking for quotes?

MR2s are expensive to insure but there must be another issue here for the quotes to be that high - do you live in a bad postcode for insurance maybe?

Most TOAD alarms can be thatcham category 1 but it's all a bit up-in-the-air recently as something has changed with the thatcham classifications (someone went bust or similar). Now I think it is the installation that is covered not the alarm itself, so for a few quid you can get a shop to certify it and then it doesn't matter what make the alarm is as it has a cerficicate.

Hi i do have an oldham post code which isn't good, but 6000 or even 2000 is pretty spectacularly high!

I might have to look into that about getting it certificated to see if that helps.

Oldham is F* which is the highest... Could be worse, if you were a few miles down the road in Newton Heath where my gran lives you'd have an M40 postcode and you wouldn't get insurance at all.

Before i bought the two i got quotes for skyline gtr r32 i could afford the car but i would have basically had to take a mortgage to cover a years insurance. At least now i know why.

I keep seeing people pay under 500 for skyline and mr2 with specialist policies i was basically running down my existing with admiral hoping to get a lower price from someone else on my renewal but that isn't looking good.

Im with admiral,to be fair even tho the guy wasnt very clued up on mr2s or mods we got there in the end and i got a good price,he was and iv found admiral to be very helpful.
Im not really sure what a specialist could offer me over admiral in my case but i have heard some horror stories regarding more generic comparison search result type companies tho
I guess a specialist is more personal,and often cheaper...but not always!

Oldham and a lot of Manchester suburbs are horrendously high risk for car insurance, let alone modified, performance and import car insurance.

Lol tell me about it.. They gave me a quote and when i went to pick the car up and take the policy over to the new car they couldn't match their own quote they gave me two days prior.

It took about 40 mins on the phone while i was agreeing to buy the car and was pretty.embarrassing. Oh and the first time i did get quoted it took ages for them to find the non standard air filter bit lol.

But I've been with admiral for about 8 years now and for me they ha e always been lower than anyone else.

Yeah bit like pulling teeth getting a policy set up but the aftersales as such has always been spot on for me if i have ever needed them

ouch!!! Im in central London im also 29 and my best quote was £2400!!!!! ridiculous!!!! I managed to get on a friends trade policy but if i had not i would of been f**ked!!! I didnt bother getting a quote before buying the car because i had an SL500 before this and my premium was £800... It makes no sense..

They said to me that if its say 50bhp more than standard, they cant insure it

I was quite specific, and made sure that the car & its mods were covered (emailed them to that effect!) and that the insurance company knew what the bhp was at the wheels and fly, just to be sure

Chris Knott are the same now too, more than 50hp over standard and they won't touch you.

I heard it was a +20BHP cap unless an existing customer. That's what happens when you undercut the rest of the UK's broker business using one underwriter .. you then get severe restrictions imposed like BHP limits, age restrictions, experience criteria etc
