i use a sniff test as well, as paul states it is not 100% accurate but for most its the best we have. if you could knock up one of your special tools when you have a minute you biscuit tin would be overflowing for a month or two.
is it all or some of the light. the warning lights will be on different circuits to the main dash lights that go on with the driving lights. can you be a bit more specific. what about the clock?

a head gasket would normally be white smoke. it does however seem a bit nasty. if its your gasket, i can do a sniff test, then you are better off getting a second hand engine. if you want a price for supply and fit or just fit then pm me.
