Re: Would a skid pan help?

Works for me :D , many a time, 17 years of police driving in conditions that would close a track. It takes time to learn until it becomes second nature, I'd agree that one day on a skid pan trying to change your driving style won't really work. For high speed road driving, rather than trackdays, you...

Re: Would a skid pan help?

They teach you to shuffle the wheel? Thats a bit stupid.. at least with your hands in a 10 to 2 position you can nearly fit full lock on without taking your hands off the wheel! Yep exactly. This is very bad practice as you will know from your racing stuff. Not only do you not where the wheels are ...

Re: Advice on Auto MR2

'Overdrive' is the wrong term really. You have a straight 4 speed box, highest speed attained in fourth. A 'proper' overdrive would attain max. speed in third and then give you a very high cruising gear as Lauren states. The button simply drops you from 4th to 3rd for overtaking great fun!

Re: Advice on Auto MR2

Toyota's figure is 9.7s 0-60 for the 158bhp engine, but you should get a little quicker using the box manually. I would reckon on 16ish for 1/4 mile.

Re: oil recommendations please

Mineral oil is what your engine would have been filled with in 1992. It's as good today as then, your engine design essentially dates back to the eighties. Never heard of a problem with GTX, half the world probably uses it, still I don't work for them. If you're going synthetic own brand i.e. Halfor...

Re: oil recommendations please

Castrol GTX 10-40, in '92 these engines were designed for mineral oil. More important is a regular and filter change. I go at 5000 miles, most tubbies or modded n/a's do 3000 mile changes.

It's one of the reasons why Toyota fit all that that soundproofing pipework! You'll get used to it.

Re: air filters and de-cat pipes?

You've only got 120bhp to play with but good torque. So, fit a K&N panel filter (£33) into the standard airbox, this will improve the breathing but retain the torque. More noticeable would be to run it on Optimax with advanced timing. DON'T fit leather seats, they're heavy, instead chuck out eve...

Re: Panel Filters advice please

Personally I'd go for K&N. I've used them on various cars for the last ,ehem, 21 years. They've been playing the game for over 50 years without complaint. Way on back when I first got a car foam filters had the same dubious reputation as steel mesh, can't see what's changed. Having said that the...

Re: Panel Filters advice please

Yes thanks, see above :D . Try Fensport or filterwarehouse.co.uk for mail order or your local Halfords can order it in pretty quickly. Or if your Sarfend way Carnosewer can get it if your brave enough to be see there!

Re: Panel Filters advice please

I'm running a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox. I've tried an open system without the resonator and there is a definite loss of pull (torque). Playing with the G-tech there is a drop in acceleration time. There is a slight noise increase with the panel but not as loud as an open cone. As ...

Re: whats all this afm only lark eh????

Your GE engine doesn't have an AFM. The part number you have is correct for your car. As you suspect just attach to the end of the intake piping. The trick is to try and get it as far into the cold air stream coming up from the nearside intake as poss. Alternatively fit a K&N panel filter no.33-...

Re: Car without service history

Bought my auto with very little history. Check all the usual, have a look at the oil, level, inside cap and how crudded it is, that'll help, see what it kicks out on a cold start.

Re: AFM?

Nope, only the FE had an AFM, your GE didn't. Someone more awake than me will explain, something to do with ECU mapping.
