Re: Loose streering

I just put AD08's on the front of mine and they outgrip the Uniroyal's I have on the back although obviously I haven't been able to test them out properly yet.

I've had several sets of Uniroyal RainSport 3's and do like them, not grippy but progressive, comfortable, cheap(ish) and good in the wet.

Re: Loose streering

My tie rods are only a couple of years old and I can't find any play so I think they're OK.

Re: Loose streering

Sorry to hijack sort of, but would a stiffer spring rate be better for a 4AGZE conversion due to more weight on the rear?

I got a V6 in mine and it didn't really make much difference to the handling balance generally so I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Loose streering

Has the preload on been set properly on the coilovers? 4/6KG BC's shouldn't be that bad. They come with the pre-load set to about 3mm I think and I've stuck with it. They're OK most of the time but every so often I hit a bump and flinch wondering what damage it's done. The other types of aftermarke...

Re: Loose streering

I got 4Kg front and 6Kg back which is the softest they will give you. They're not too bad generally but I hit a pot hole in February and it bent the arms on on one corner (replaced now) and it hasn't been right since.

Re: Loose streering

I wouldn't have thought old tyres would have been a problem and ball joints should last ages, just check for any play in them. Do you track your car regularly? I only ask because I have BC's on my car and wish I'd bought another set of Koni's to be honest because coilovers are just too hard for UK r...

Re: Loose streering

Fitted them this morning and they haven't made the slightest difference. I've got to the point where I haven't got time to work on it anymore so just going to leave it for a while now.

Have to be honest, I haven't had time to fit them yet. Will have to wait until next weekend now, I'll let you know.

Re: Loose streering

I ordered some new bushes from Superflex and there's no play whatsoever so I guess the old metal sleeves had worn over the years making for slightly dodgy handling. Haven't fitted them yet but I'm guessing this will sort it. Thanks for your help guys.

Re: Loose streering

I got the steering column welded, test drove it and it's not much different, maybe slightly sharper steering but not sure. I think I'm going to look at the strut rod bushes again, my old one's had play so I swapped them for some prothane bushes I had from ages ago which were OK but I noticed that th...

Re: Loose streering

Thanks dude, great thread. That's exactly what I'm talking about then so hopefully fault found.

I'll see if my local garage is up for a bit of welding but I wonder if I could pour some liquid poly down it like for engine mounts? Would messy though, lol.

Re: Loose streering

I think the bush you mean is further up and it seems fine, the bit I mean is directly above the splined part where it goes into a slightly wider section, i.e. before the joint that looks like a second UJ.

Re: Loose streering

Currently, the alignment is all over the place because I've taken everything apart over the last few days. Before that it's had eight alignments in the last month although some of those were by guys who don't have a clue how to track a MK1. Can't say I'm doing any better myself, lol. I know my car L...

Re: Loose streering

I've taken the steering column out and generally it seems fine as does the UJ but there's a slight amount of play at the bottom of the shaft where the spline goes into the column, there seems to be a join of sorts and I can wiggle the spline left and right a small amount. Not sure if this could be t...

Re: Loose streering

I hadn't thought of that no, I'll take a look tomorrow. What's the best way to test it?

I know there's a bush in the steering column that can wear away too so I could take a look at that.

Re: Loose streering

I just checked them and they're dry as a bone. It seems to corner and brake OK so I wouldn't have thought it was the shocks.

Re: Loose streering

I did think about those but they're BC coilovers and I only put them in a year ago. I guess I could lift the gaitors and check for oil on the shaft maybe?

Loose streering

Haven't been on the forums in a while so hello again to those that remember me. I'm having a problem with loose steering at the moment that's got me baffled, basically at motorway speeds I can feel the car constantly pulling to one side then the other as if there's play in something; it's quite scar...

Re: Stock spring rates

I had a proper look at it tonight and checked all the bolt sizes on my car. The rears use 19mm and the BC strut matches this with a elongated hole for the upper. However, the fronts use 17mm and the BC's have a 17mm lower but 19mm upper hole (not elongated) so technically they would fit but it doesn...
