looking for waterleak i had similar problem no sign of leak
try removing plastic panel running from t bar at side of windscreen to glove box
water dripped inside panel causing problem amazed how ?
might be worth a look cured mine good luck

rusty mr2 perhaps non turbo cars are not quick enough to avoid rust
i thought uk n/a cars were corrosion treated as uk spec

just one quick point to try had my car in for mot today passed but queried proceedure tested left hand exhaust when viewed from back he said would have failed on that one he then put probe in right hand exhaust much lower figures passed? strange but true perhaps worth a mention try it and see unexpl...

try camskill for dist cap rotor arm or toyota if you want quality will probably last longer dont spend apenny til you sort out what the problem is rather than sprinkling money at parts that may not improve situation focus on parts you can visibly see are exeptionally worn i e dis cap etc follow thro...

I had same problem with my 98 rev 5 n/a try looking at dist cap +rotro arm may be burnt out mine was -careful with dis cap screws abit of patience wd 40 helps also check for free play throttle cable -
full open barrels dont arrive till 4500 rpm so check linkages on inlet
