Some imports have inertia belts. belt locks on hard braking as the pendulum swings. Take car out and perform emergency stop to test

Find the oil feed to the head then look at the gaskets.it should be obvious. Ok i am going to backtrack a little: I dont know what oil clearances you are building the bottom end to or your intended use (ie high rpm) so really just pointing out something for you to take into consideration. No it does not need to be modified. It is a multilayer steel gasket. Toyota also addressed a problem with the earlier engine by adding an oil restrictor in the gasket that is located at the feed to the head. this reduces the tendancy for the engines to fill the head full of oil at constant high rpm....

Go with the toyota rev3 gasket. Its better than the cometic and cheaper.( In my opinion)

have you checked its not dripping down back of engine from camcover corner (problem on rev2 head) above alternator or cam seals if youve had cams out. this is more likely than the pump leaking.

what i found that surprised me was the head casting. it had all the fittings for vvti on exhaust side (except needs some machining/holes drilled etc and xtra sensors)
so it appears there is a possibility to run dual vvti with the redtop head
