Re: Strange very light metalic rattle on startup?

I had a mk2 golf where the manifold developed a slight crack. It drove me potty trying to find out what was causing the noise. I ended up fitting microphones to the engine to try and isolate the noise. It made a curious metallic noise rather than a blowy noise and I was convinced there was something...

Re: 4AGE budget cam install and tuning

He had the det cans on but just did the fuelling although he did trim part of the ignition table at part load at around 4000rpm to remove some detonation sounds. It was about 6 years ago (scary how time flies) and I sat alongside him whilst we did the mapping. I did mean to go back the following wee...

Re: 4AGE budget cam install and tuning

It's definitely worth addressing the overfuelling. A few years ago I had my stock mk1b remapped by Rich Benton at Powerstation Tewkesbury and he removed the stock overfuelling whilst remapping the fuelling and it does help hold onto power past the peak. My car delivered a fatter torque curve and pro...

Re: mr2 mk1 prices?

Never trust what a seller says when it comes to looking for rust. As Phil says, they probably have never properly checked for rust in the sills, A/B pillars/floor pan etc. I first seriously started looking at buying a mk1 in about 1992 (finally bought one in 1994) and I can remember seeing some hid...

Re: Trying to get a hold of JMR_AW11

Note that the 3D ignition maps I posted up in that link are for when the throttle is being pressed. There's another ignition map for when the engine is idling. Also, the ECU has the ability to detect a sudden drop in idle revs and it can temporarily add a burst of ignition advance to pep up the engi...

Re: Trying to get a hold of JMR_AW11

I sent the info via PM on how to access them on the 89661-17070 ECU to vashy some time ago. There's also a 2 wire ignition timing interface inside the ECU that lets you alter the timing using an external 4 position switch as you drive the car. eg -4deg, -2deg, 0deg, +2deg are the 4 possible switch o...

Re: Trying to get a hold of JMR_AW11

That's a bit of a disappointment. I had the impression that there was a secret race map on the ecu based on what you had wrote, suitable for different cams and such. Did you find out later that the second map was for worse fuel? Come to think of it AW11's with GZE in the states had a switch for pre...

Re: Trying to get a hold of JMR_AW11

Hi The alternative ignition map is more likely to be for lower grade fuel. The ECU also switches in a basic fuel correction map at the same time that generally makes the ECU run richer at certain rpm. But basically, the ignition map gives less advance at high load and rpm. It would be a miracle if i...

Re: Removing Sound Deadening Material

Putting in a lighter seat doesn't wreck the refinement of the car compared to removing sound deadening. Plus the weight it saves is higher up and presumably the seat will hug the driver better during cornering. By all means remove the sound deadening as well for a dedicated track car but I bet the m...

Re: Removing Sound Deadening Material

Don't really use mine as a road car very much Sound deadening is just a small part of a long term plan to remove non essential weight Whatever any of us do there will be others who don't like it C'est la vie Peter I'm not saying I don't like it, I just question the validity of it. To me it's only w...

Re: Removing Sound Deadening Material

Sorry to be a neghead on this but IMO you have to be pretty hardcore to want to remove the sound deadening material. Fine for a dedicated track car but surely it will ruin the refinement of the car on the road for next to zero return in performance? I only ever filled the fuel tank to full on long t...

Re: Is this the best photo of a Mk1 in the world today?

I always thought the pictures of the mk1 in the 1985 Autocar roadtest were very well shot.

They managed to capture all its best angles and this isn't easy on a mk1 MR2. My mum bought a brand new black mk1 the same year and I can remember drooling over the pics in autocar.

Re: Is this the best photo of a Mk1 in the world today?

No it isn't!

Stupid cheapo arches, tacky graphics, ridiculous wheels, daft looking lazy headlights and the ubiquitous black bonnet. Usually, such motor murderers concentrate on mk2 MR2s but this owner managed to ruin a mk1 :(

Re: Wideband AFR monitoring and Adj. FPR

Both JDM and USDM superchargers have the 'high boost vs lowering rpm' lean off map in the ROM code. The USDM ECU has a 64pin MCU chip in it (42pin for JDM) and the USDM MCU has more RAM and ROM and has more detailed maps etc. However, both ECUs have the same shape map for leanoff. Basically, the ECU...

Re: Swapping my motorbike for a Mk1......

Haven't seen one of those TDRs for maybe 20yrs... I remember that they used to really howl when revved. I had a dirt bike converted for road use and that was great fun too. All I've got left of the original 350LC is the sales brochure but I've got a fair few (expired) engine bits from the dirt bike ...
