Stef I will be selling my own reprog module for the mk1 MR2 ECU soon. If you like, you can critisise my stuff, you can have a play with my first attempt at a remapping GUI for the ECU. www.jmross.freeserve.co.uk/demo3d.html to download a demo simulation. I won't bite if you pick it full of holes, it...

Delimiter
Hi Stef I sort of assumed there would be an insulator under the PCB but it isn't obvious from the photo, hence my (reasonable?) concern. If you post pictures of initial prototype PCBs then you can expect comments like the ones I made. Some (most?) of my initial prototype PCBs look far worse than tha...

It looks like a good product at a good price. However I do have one or two slight concerns. I looked at the enlarged image of the PCB on the web page. What have they done to prevent the bottom side of the PCB from chafeing through into the transparent flexi PCB it sits over? If the components are st...

Re: what year mr2 idea conceived?
" I could waffle about this for ages..... Rumours abounded that Toyota took apart a Fiat X1/9, increased the basic dimensions by 10%, put a proper engine and brakes in it, reengineered it properly and built a great little car. " Didn't Rover try the same for the MGF? I heard they started o...

Turbo ECU
All the mk2 ECUs I have seen use a custom 64 pin micro chip. This chip keeps its code and maps within its own internal mask programmed ROM. Therefore there is no external EPROM to play with. The mk1 4A-GE ECU is similar but uses a 40 pin masked ROM micro chip (different instruction set to the 64 chi...

ECU datalogging
I made a laptop interface to my mk1 MR2 ECU a couple of years ago. See www.jmross.freeserve.co.uk/page1.html These ECUs are very powerful when it comes to diagnostics. The mk1 (4AGE) had this hidden capability which was probably only used by the ECU developers. When they finished they tried to hide ...

V6
Paul I still don't know how you got that V6 into a mk1. It must be the only one in the World. How much torque/bhp will it have? That V6 engine is gonna take some taming! Even my stock mk1 can get scary on wet and greasy roundabouts! As for the ECUs, I will sell them (eventually!) At the moment I'm h...

ECU
Hi Lauren I've finished all the hardware design for the ECU. The module fits all ECU types but the control software is unique for each type. I'm just writing the new control software for the new 3D fuel mapping. If you fancy being a beta tester for the first few ECUs I'll let you know when they will...

ECU
Hi again Paul. Did you manage to get that V6 engine into your mk1? That will be one awesome car. Glad you like the ECU stuff in the club mag. I've started looking at my modded 4AGE ECU again recently and have decided to bin the complex 2D speed and density fuel mapping used in the stock ECU program ...

Re: TVIS adjuster thing on ebay
On the UK mk1 MR2 the ECU definitely DOES advance the ignition timing slightly with a step when the TVIS kicks in. I know this because I read out the ROM code from the ECU micro chip and traced through it to work out all the mapping etc. If you want to know more, the ECU actually has a small delay l...

TVIS
I would guess it totally removes the control wire from the ECU to the TVIS and takes complete control of the TVIS. It probably just counts the RPM signal and then switches in the TVIS at the point set by the control knob. Therefore the ECU will have no control over the TVIS. What the designer of thi...

MK1 Chassis
There are mk1s out there that are not rusted away. I have seen plenty of ads for mint low mileage mk1s. I have a red mk1 which I have had for 11 years which never sees wet/salty roads. Apart from some minor surface corrosion on some of the suspension parts, you will not find any rust or blemishes un...

OIL CHANGE
A quick tip for mk1 servicing.
When removing the oil filter try and avoid spilling oil on to the exhaust downpipe which is directly below the filter. I did this once and the oil starts to smoke once the exhaust heats up.
It can be quite alarming (and smoky/smelly!) when this jappens.
