I was wondering about this too. Is 5th gear the only weak point in the 'box? Do the bearings etc. last a long time? Because if you've got pretty high miles would it not be more cost effective to just have it reconditioned?

Sorry to bring this back up but it is definately the master cylinder that is slowly leaking as its bubbled the paint on the bulk head . Is there a repair kit for them or is it just best to replace it? Anyone have any ideas of prices?

I'd go for a sealing wax. Meguires Gold Class will do just the job. Autoglym also do one called Liquid Hard Wax but I'm not sure if you can buy it off the shelves as I've only ever used it in the trade.
