ISCV

Thanks Paul. The rubber pipe seems okay, still quite rubbery, but I'll see about swapping it out when I get the black silicone stuff I've ordered.

Dismantling heater controls

I'm trying to dismantle the heater controls because I removed the A/C some time ago and want to re-use the 'A/C' and 'Econ' buttons to do something else. I remember seeing some stuff online where someone had done this and removed the interlock between these buttons, but I can't find it now. One butt...

Idle

I've posted before about having problems with the idle on my SC since I got it 10 years ago. I recently took all the induction bits off and cleaned them thoroughly and had a good fiddle about with the ISCV, which was boggin full of grime, but was also acting a bit off when I put voltage across it. A...

Black

Like this a lot. My side skirts were pretty broken up and last year I repaired them (fibreglass and filler) and decided to spray them matt black to save cost. A 400ml tin of mica blue costs me almost £18 locally, but I can get 500ml tins of matt black for £3 each. I've just done the front spoiler la...

Japan

Lauren, you're right of course, if there are parts in Toyota's inventory then they can get them, but more items are running out each year. The ISC valve for example has run out in Toyota's inventory. There are some left in the US with third-party suppliers, but by the time you add shipping, possible...

Speakers

I tried all sorts of things, but without a sub, you'll have difficulty getting much bass. There isn't enough baffle behind the speakers in their original positions. My car has expensive Kenwood speakers in the dash with lots of acoustic wadding behind them and they still sound like Wheezy the pengui...

Get it?

I don't get it, if you want a car like that, why not buy a MK2?

For me the whole appeal of the MK1 is the weird angular 80s look.

Not for me :)

Parts

I was looking for a bolt for the ISCV on my SC last week, went into the local Toyota dealership and they said it would cost 88p + VAT, but (wait for it), it would take 31 days to arrive from Japan. I went down to a hardware place about 200 yards away and they got me 2 bolts (they were M6 25mm ones, ...

SC Oil

Nice looking car, in better condition than mine :)

What sort of oil did you use for the supercharger? I've had my car 10 years and have never gone near the SC, but one look at that photo and I think I'd better change mine.

Health to enjoy you new car!

Toyota Spares

Over the past 3 years the availability of Toyota spares for the SC has become a bit critical. Too many parts were particular not just to the 4A-GZE engine, but that car. Alternators are all gone now as well as some odd parts like ISC valves and so on. Some stock is still available in the US and Japa...

Idle

Paul, that sounds like the answer. I'll get a look at that hose tomorrow.

Cheers, Glenn.

ISCV

This is only applicable to the SC 4A-GZE engine.

ISCV

Okay, I finaly got round to removing the AFM and throttle body and cleaning everything. I took the Idle Speed Control Valve (that there ISCV) off and gave it a good clean as well. I discovered that the Throttle Position Sensor wasn't in quite the right place so I adjusted that to agree with the sett...

MK1.71

Looks like a half-baked attempt to make a MK1 into a MK2, can't see the point to be honest.

Like most people on here, it's the boxiness of the MK1 that appeals to me.

North

Kate, I think I might know your car, did it used to live in the North somewhere? There was a guy in Belfast had a car identical to that a few years back. Lovely clean motor and very original.

Re: engine management light

I must say the replacement of the Speedo gear thingy took a lot of fiddling and was quite tricky. Apparently a well known fault! Here's a tip for Barney and anyone else that makes this job much simpler. Undo the bolt holding the RA drive to the gearbox, but don't remove the speedo drive cable. Afte...

Money

Had exactly the same problem and with it being an SC, I'd put my money on the infamous right-angle drive being gummed-up.

In my humble one, I'd check there first, especially the keyed pin which I reckon is designed as a safe fail point. If it is the pin, they're only about a fiver.

Twisted mind

With my mixed-up way of thinking, I'm now looking at that kit and thinking, if I converted a small petrol hatchback (not unlike the diesel one I have now), I'd be quids in and could keep running the MR2 on petrol. Fuel consumption? About 20mpg on my SC, but it's my Sunday car. Any more advice on the...

Not what

I just got a full steering rack for my Skoda on eBay with all the pipes, steering sensor and all for £80 delivered. Phoning local scrapyards I couldn't get them to beat that. Back in the day I bid £10 on a pair of Mk1 T-bar glasses on Boxing Day and won. Even at £10 postage it was a steal. eBay has ...

Can't be too careful

I'm really sorry to hear this, seems to be getting more common. I had a couple come to look over a MK1 I had for sale a few years ago and they wanted to test it so they left their 7-year-old daughter behind as collatoral. It was only when they were away down the street I thought 'what if this kid is...
