Been to the Nurburgring again....

Post by paul port »

Just got back from my latest trip to the Nurburgring...

Went out there a couple of weekends ago for the 24Hrs Race
I'll post some video snippits at the weekend - Someone entered a MR2 Turbo!! There was also an NSX and a Skyline as well.

Image

The Weekend after was another public day... Here's one of my laps... a 9Min-30Sec

Enjoy: 30Mb

You may need this codec if it does not play:

I used the 3iVX codec - just another DIVX Mpeg4 clone - but without the adverts and overlays...

Media player should automatically download the codec, if not...
get it here http://www.3ivx.com/

Alternatively it's compat with Apple Quicktime-6

The car does indeed look like a NA, but was listed in the entrants list as a Turbo...

How many times have you been there? you seem to know your way pretty good!

I been once, and found it a little frustrating cause i dont know what bend is coming next :?

esp when the speed rises.

I've been going since summer 2000...
That was actually my second trip this year... Heading out again 24-27th June to meet up with Roger Hole and a few others.

I think three trips this year will be enough... I'll be getting all rung-out!

Hey Paul,

You fancy joining us for the 8-11th July then as well? If you're going out with Roger earlier you could chill out for a couple of weeks and then come back for a few more laps at the end of a holiday ;)

Go on, you know you want to

Alas.... I have a commitment that weekend:
http://www.oxegen.ie/home

Basically I will be out in Ireland watching live bands and getting drunk.
Otherwise I would have been out there like a shot!

I'll be looking forward to some impressive videos!

just how cool is this guy? 8)

Paul, what was the 24hrs race to watch? I've heard about it before, is it anything like lemans?

Good vid, you've been there before! I like the way you point at bikers to let them know you've seen them, I'll have to remember that one. Also like the foot-cam, the well-caught slide into Eschbach(?), and the exhaust noise!

The 24Hrs was a hoot!
I was out there ‘on my own’ but it’s surprising how many brits there are... Just keep an eye out for the flags... There was even a Marshall from the USA, so it draws people from all over.
My plan was to walk backwards around the circuit to get video / photos from as many corners as I could... Took me the 24Hrs with an overnight stop off at Fuchsrohre – the night-time stuff is excellent! I’ve still to go through all the video - I used an IR security camera when it got too dark... Yet to really look at the results!
The only bad thing was the rain – turned the place into a mud-bath! Fortunately the track was dry for most of the race.

I think if I were to go again... I’d have to do the German thing... Go in a group... Park ourselves at an excellent spot, build a podium to watch the race from and consume large amounts of Bratwurst and Pilstner in front of a big bonfire.

Thanks for the comments about the video... been doing a lot of experimenting with that – Unfortunately, just after that lap an eagle-eyed marshal spotted the main camera and told me to turn it off (He didn’t spot the other three though).. Will have to be more discrete next time!

Ah, that's a decent excuse if ever there was one - have a great time there :)

As for Videos of my own - nothing quite as impressive as your setup, I still need to work out how I can route all the wiring around through the Roadster, and get a forwards facing camera installed without upsetting the marshalls.

BTW - the camera that you had in the main cabin that the marshalls spotted - where did you place it ? I think my options in the Roadster for locations are very limited by comparison though!

I had the bullet cam taped to the top of the centre storage bin - covered by a Nurburgring cap when going through the barriers.

I guess either I didn't place the cap correctly at the end of the previous lap or he spotted me taking the cap off at the start of the previous lap...
Either that or he thought it strange to have a cap sat there with the Tbars out

Marshall: What iz under de cap?
Me: A video Camera
Marshall: It iz not allowed, you must take it down
Me: Ok....

Shame... it had worked fine for the last 3 years :(

Hi Paul

Nice to see you having more trips to the Ring and getting those laps in to improve your familiarity with the place

Sounds like you are getting more comfortable with the place - 9.30

Still to download and watch the video

Trying to arrange holiday and money for a trip in Sept 16-20 inclusive maybe - perhaps see you there?

LMAO!

Three years is lucky. But you are too honest! You should try this:

Marshall: What is under de cap?
You: It is my hamster.
Marshall: Why iz your hampster underneath de cap?
You: He did a ten minute lap and now he is sleeping.
Marshall: Ja, ten minutes is gut for de hampster. Okay, you may proceed.
You: Thankyou.
