RADIO ON IMPORTED CARS?

Post by Davidvincent »

Hello once again,
Here is my next little project to sort out.
On my recently acquired imported MR2
My attention is now drawn to the radio, and yes you've guessed it.
The Japanese radio frequency only goes to 90 megs in the FM range.
I have heard talk of a frequency expander.
Is this a fact or myth, or will I need to change the whole radio set,
which would be a pitty as it is a huge double height set, and sounds great?

As usual, thanks very much should you undertake this mission.
Best regards
David

Try finding the stations lower down the frequency . My local station is B.R.M.B. 96.4 megs......on my Jap import its on 78.4 megs... everything is 18 megs lower. Not sure if i've an expander fitted but worth a try as i think the standered " huge double height set" does sound good. \:D/

You will need an expander to pick up stations above 90Mhz, obviously you won't need one if you buy a UK radio.

If you want to get an expander then you should be able to pick one up from any good car audio installer or store. They plug onto your aerial socket behind the head unit and should cost no more than £30.

An expander shifts the frequency by a set amount. Basically on an FM (frequency modulated) system, a carrier wave is added to the sound frequency to give a very high frequency to transmit. Your head unit strips off this carrier to leave the sound frequencies. A band expander adds an extra chunk (offset) to the carrier wave. So - an 18meg BE will result in the stations being found on your import HU at a position 18Meg lower. They are available in various offsets so you can decide which section of the UK bands you want to listen to.
