Red Rev 3 tintop turbo. 4 years on and still tinkering. Been on the rollers.

Post by Nails »

I bought this MR2 in feb 2011 from an imoc member with around 85,000 total miles (110,000 odometer reading ) as my third tubby and first tintop. It looked like this when I bought it, very clean and a few choice mods of spilt rims, coilovers and bomex skirts and pp rear spats and japspeed exhaust

I changed the japspeed exhaust for a futjiso(sp?) legalis r as the japspeed was too boomy and looked a bit like a cylons ar$e

Image

and a toyo sports intercooler/gts chris shroud found its way on and a berk decat and a blitz bov

Image

aswell as a full sevice, plugs leads, filters, thermostat which was sticking, coolant , gearbox oil etc

the dashpanels got changed for standard stuff and removed elgow dials as prefer standard, turbo timer was disconnected as in the way of my sunglasses slot and I can run the turbo down myself with self control lol

Image

I'd like to replace the seats for standard items as don't like the silver centres, may just get them retrimmed as may be cheapest option as outside black leather is new and seats firm and all bits still working.

I then got cold feet and went through a stage of wanting to sell it after the birth of my son, I came round after realising that there wasn't much else that I could replace with this with that also did everything I liked about this one and yet had 4 seats so I kept it.

A set of refurbed brake calipers and new discs and pads were fitted around this point and calipers painted black instead of red as they looked quite small behind the new wheels and I was trying to draw your eye away from this

New wheels for a treat, Advans and powercaoted in a browny goldy bronzey colour. Lowered the car another 15mm or so on the coilovers.

It stayed like that for a while just getting polished and another service, then I bought these

Image

radtec chargecooler, toms skirts rear bumper and spoiler and a electronic Greddy boost controller, this was late 2012.

Which brings up to the now, cambelt and pulleys changed last weekend, the car hasn't been used since last oct and needs a good general clean up inside and out also

Image

Aircon stuff removed as doesn't seem to work anymore and it give more space to move around and for pipes etc for the chargecooler

chargecooler fitted in place and pipes pushed on to check for fit

Image

next plans for the bay is to clean it up a bit, try and relocate the airfilter closer to the sidevent and just an overall smattering of painting and tidying, also have a pair of 11" fans to fit, either in a alloy sheet which I already have or cut out the raintray like jimgts

And for the bodywork the front bumper is coming off for repainting along with the aeroware splitter, front wings are getting de-indicatored and front tobelerones being reinstated.
Toms skirts and winglets fitted along with toms rear bumper and spoiler, boot and mirrors also being repainted as the mirrors seemed to have been missed out of the full respray its previously had and the boot needs its spoiler holes filled.
Spoiler needs sorting as aerial hole has been filled over and I want to keep my aerial.

Front bumper is the only thing I've managed to get off on Friday which took a lot longer than I thought and left me with a few bolts to drill out and a few parts I need, both side toberlones as mine were painted over, a passengerside foglight and the passengerside undertray. If you have any these please let me know. Weather has been a bit poo since to do anything more nut hoping to get this done and car back on the road in july. a sensible amount of time with work house stuff and fmialy stuff, things were easier when I didn't have to juggle all of that.

Image

pretty happy with the condition of the car still underneath seems really clean with only surface rust on the arbs hubs etc, front crash bars a bit brown but again seems to be only surface rust. chassis mounts and what I can see of the sills look fine, got to get the skirts off to fit the toms skirts so can have a better look then although I doubt theres anything wrong there.

My mate who loves to hate working on my car with me says everything thing on the car is awkward. I had to agree when I saw how many fasteners were used just to hold the front bumper on. Definatley made it a lot easier with 2 people on most jobs for extra leverage on small spanners where you cant get anything decent in, some one to carry on when you bu88er off to make tea and have a smoke etc lol or just when you think this is impossible and the other one just wiggles something and its done.

Cheers mate. Nothing like a red car for shiny shiny. Been really nice today here but been stuck at work. Used all my holidays up till July now aswell. Meant to start this in march but went to tenerife instead. Booked another week off in april to start and then went to mallorca last minute. Now I wish I hadn't gone as tbe car would have been finished now but at the time it was better chilling out on the beach lol.
skirts should be off this wednesday on my next day off if you're interested in them.

Remember seeing this up for sale years ago, redder than red! Nice developments since buying it, with all of them being improvements for the better. :thumleft:

cheers mate, been following your thread too. Must be like driving a brand new car. Really nice job and nice touches. Im imagining MR2 specialists must have no skin on their knuckles ever, and have a great many tools involving removing stuck and snapped bolts

Been out in the sunshine today removing the skirts, wings, rear bumper and spoiler. Glad to say nothing nasty found behind the skirts just a bit mucky, looks like some one has done a really good job of waxoil in the past, and I reckon without the draintubes of T-bars and sunroofs the sills on a tin tops get a lot less wet. Even the sponge inside was still brand new and bone dry.

Out on the side street outside to turn it round to better to protect it under the car port. Our lass isn't happy as now its summer the car shouldn't be in the garden anymore the carport isn't really a carport, its for our garden furniture. Plenty of summer for that left love!

Image

Image

Having a problem with my Toms spoiler though, previous owner decided to bodge up the aerial hole, I don't know if it was a rev 2 or 3, and I don't know if there is any other differences between a rev2 and rev 3 Toms spoiler other than the placement of the aerial hole.

Upon fixing the Toms spoiler on and looking to see where to redrill the spoiler it doesn't appear that spoiler come over far enough, more like it needs a chunk taking out of the spoiler rather than a hole through it, Ive tried to take to pictures to show what I mean.

Image

Image

In the above I couldn't get the boot to shut, below I removed the aerial to check how far its out.

Any ideas anyone?

Finished for the night

Theres no badges glued on the insides so I cant say the genuine. They are a good fit though and don't have any signs of being repaired or chopped about. I'd be happy with a £100 for the pair, but as with any bodykit parts I'd imagine postage would be a pain to make sure they don't get damaged. Collection of course is fine?

as per my other post Im having a few problems with the tomes spoiler, it seems I have a rev2 spoiler with the aerial hole filled. And to fit it Id need to have my aerial removed and filled/painted etc. Something Im not keen on doing.
My options at the moment are to refit standard rev 3 spoiler, or go spoiler less. Im also wondering about a rev 5 spoiler. Do they use the same mounting holes as a rev 3?

Put the skirts on loosely for some pics of with and without standard rev 3

Need to decide pretty quickly so I can get the stuff to the painters and I can get one with fitting the rest of the chargecooler/ebc etc.

I've got a Toms spoiler fitted to mine. It's a rev 2 spoiler on a rev 3 body so the aerial does catch on the way up but still just about works.

I can can take some photos of the hole placement on the weekend if you like?

not much done this weekend. Very wet yesterday and usual busy family stuff today. Bought some irwin bolt extractors and removed the mirrors from the backing plates. Best tool I've ever bought.

front aeroware lip fitted. Only got writing/stamps to remove from mirrors. A few snapped bolts to drill out and to decide on the toms spoiler still and then get the stuff to the painters this week sometime.

Some pics from simba have helped a lot to see what I need to do to make it fit.

Man'd up tonight and got the dremmel and attacked the toms spoiler to make it fit.

Bend to my will you fibreglass thing!

Looking holey

Sticking it in the hole

Needs cleaning up still and it needs that extra chunk out of the bottom/side to fit over the aerial. Hopefully it'll look fine once all the same colour/shiny etc.

just got the mirror covers to sand off the stamp/writing then can get them dropped off at the painters this week, Im just hoping hes not too busy as I'd like it on the road for early July.
