3SGTE Roadster - update 13.2 @ 108mph 1/4 mile

Post by Lee H »

Evening all,

Decided to start a thread now as hopefully things will start to get a bit more interesting with the car now. Don't get a great deal of time to work on it but here goes.

Decided to have a change from my mk1.5 as fancied something a little newer, never liked the mk2 so went straight on to a mk3.

Image

Now I know the mk3 can look a little feminine so it had to be a black one. This came up local.

Image

Image

Complete with ditch finder tyres as most of them are and in need of a good polish. Love the handling and driving position but not the power.

Had the standard wheels powder coated and fitted new Toyo's. Fitted a chassis brace and also TTE lowering springs. Also fitted a TRD replica bodykit to make it look a bit more manly.

Image

Then I cut down the plates slightly and fitted a hardtop.

Image

Image

Image

Then I bought these mounts off a guy in the states to fit a 3SGTE into a mk3.

Image

Bottled it as not much info out there on the swap and bought this. Also didn't want the car off the road as I love driving it.

Image

Decided I didn't want this either as 190bhp wouldn't cut it.

Also bought another car to crave my fast car needs as can be seen in the above picture.

Image

320ish bhp but still not as fun as the MR2.

Decided to pull my finger out and decided the 3SGTE was what was needed.

Image

Also bought an updated radiator.

Image

And fitted along with the chargecooler rad.

Image

Trying to do as many of the small jobs as possible to minimise the time the car is off the road although I expect to be without it for a few months at some point.

Loving this project dude :D

You should get those brackets copied. I reckon they could be done for a lot less over here and you could maybe make your money back

Looking good!

Did consider that with the brackets but can't see much demand over here. People seem to be against putting an older, heavier engine in these cars in case it upsets the handling.

Honda is supercharged at 8psi amongst other things. Power is still climbing at the limiter of 8700rpm!!

Been a bit sidetracked as the reliable Honda decided to spit its dummy out last weekend. Have always been suspect of the fuel return system that was fitted by a previous tuner and it turns out to have been proper bodged. Breathers blocked off etc so tank presurises and car won't run right with 1/3 tank of fuel in.

Returned it to a stock fuel system and had to have a full remap as no rising rate regulator.

Image

Feels a lot better now and has gained a little torque.

New wheels fitted.

Image

Image

Noticed with the hardtop off I still have a lot of chassis flex despite the brace from Mattperformance. I collected facelift front braces and fitted them.

Image

Not holding out much hope of it making a difference but was easy swap and cheap.

Bought yet another car to use while this is off the road.

Image

And took the engine out of the first one.

Today's work.

Fitted walbro pump. Just waiting for my mate to knock me something up at work to blank off the stock regulator now.

Image

Cleaned the bay. Not that you can tell as Toyota decided to put so little paint in here.

Image

Image

Also removed the air intake tube from the passenger side 1/4 as its no longer needed.

Found some shifter bearings from my mk1 and they fitted the mk3.

Image

Need to get the outer cv's off the turbo shaft now as they need a little machining to fit the mk3 hubs.

think i just found my next project lol, this had crossed my mind but i had been put off because i wrongly assumed fitting a 3sgte would require custom mounts.
yours will be a right weapon when its done, how does the weight of a 3sgte compare to the engine you are removing?

Mounts came from a guy in the US. Also got gear linkage brackets but they are proving to be a pain as they foul on the metal bypass pipe where it comes round the head.

Not sure on weight difference, will be a fair bit as the E153 is silly heavy.

looks easier due to rear access to work on the engine than in the mk1

Dropped the crossmember off for welding today, should have it back tomorrow.

So onto a job I've been dreading. Had to remove the metal water bar behind the turbo connected to the hose from hell to bend it to clear the linkage brackets. Was an absolute pain to get back on. All gear stuff now done and selects gears well although it's a nightmare round that side of the engine now.

Image

Image

Image

Fuel lines all connected now plus a couple of water pipes. Plumbed in the AVCR solonoid as well and now onto intake location.
