ohhh problems wont stop - slight oil leak and error code 52

Post by Gullzter »

Ive got an issue which occured a few days ago, basically i was driving along the motorway as usual when i heard a pop sound from engine bay which has stuck on the engine management light. I stopped immiediately checking for loose hoses etc but couldnt see anything wrong so i continued driving home at a steady pace however when i got off the motorway i noticed smoke from engine bay.
Stopped immidiately to notice some liquids on top manifold which turned out to be oil.
I did also notice after light came on if i put the foot down it feels like the turbo doesnt want to kick in and limps if i put the foot down.
Got some pics i can upload but not sure if they will help!

Anyone got any ideas what it could be, does it sound like a major problem?

Thanks

Where is the oil coming from?

Can't believe the amount of issues you've had with that car. Bet having a look once it's light this morning and see if you can see where the fluid is coming from, there's a few hoses,water/oil for the turbo I'm sure also. Rocker gasket maybe? Let me know how you get on mate

Were you on boost when it popped?

..the only thing I can promise for sure is slow progress.

May 2015
just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

Still in the garage...

I really cant see, had a look yesterday before, during and after running engine and couldnt see any dripping at all.. Its just sitting on top of manifold.

That has come from your cam cover gasket.
You need to get that changed together with the rubber washers under the bolts.

Surely the question is why the cam cover gasket would suddenly start leaking so badly whilst booting it? Excess pressure in the cam cover maybe?

Is your catch can blocked?

Also- why is the engine light on? What error codes have you got?

Could it be something has let go whilst on boost that has caused a surge in pressure in the cam cover and causing the leak (and so the leak is a symptom not the cause)?

Probably worth a compression check I reckon :-k

Hopefully something much simpler though, maybe a blocked catch can leading to the gasket "popping" out, and maybe a boost leak at the same time?? You need to find out what the error codes are...might be a really easy fix as Bob suggests :thumleft:

I was around 3000 revs when it happened.. Boost wasnt opening then all of a sudden it opened really quickly which was unusual and popped straight away hence why i thought a hose had popped off but when i checked i couldnt find any loose hoses.
Im off work tomorrow so will get error codes checked then and i will try to check if there are any leaks in the hoses if it is ok weather.

Thanks

Sounds strange...could be a number of things, error codes is a good place to start if the engine light is still on :-k

Hopefully something straight forwards to sort :thumleft:

So got some good advice from Peter Gidden last night, hopefully get things sorted with his help.
Today i checked error codes which shows up error codes 21 and 52. 21 was previously on as i hadnt got round to sorting however never seen 52 (knock sensor) before.
Is there anything else i can check in the mean time in order to start eliminating or pin pointing possible issues?

Ill probably have to take the car down to Peter soon to have a good look over everything however would be nice to get as much sorted myself first or even get it driveable as at this moment in time i dont think it is sensible to drive it.

You are going to need to fit a new knock sensor.
But if you have had the amount of knock to damage the sensor, then have that oil blow out of the gasket I would say you have broken a piston or two
