[Mk2] [Turbo] Update on the transmission rattle! Problem solved!

Post by Scott Barton »

Travelled to Nathan's 'Century Motorsport' today to have my new modified gearbox fitted.
We had spoken at length about my annoying 'rattle' upon start up and i ordered a new friction plate in advance in case it was that.

Old box came out with no real fuss, and the starter motor which was also suspected turned out ok. Next we looked at the clutch and flywheel...and there was the problem. The outer ring gear on the flywheel had worn and was loose, rattling around the casing of the flywheel. Some of the allen bolts were loose and the internal teeth had sheared.
My clutch had also worn down to the rivets! #-o

So, a phone to Fensport and £700 later, a new flywheel & 6 puck clutch is being delivered to Nathan tomorrow.

Then he went the extra mile and offered me his own car for me travel home in! I now have a very nice white Nissan Skyline sitting on my drive! Really cant thank Nathan enough for this, talk about exceptional customer service!

Will be travelling back to Kidderminster from Kent either Thursday or Friday to swop the cars over, with a new gear box with final drive mod, a brand new clutch and spanking new Fidanza flywheel.

Just in time for Japfest. :thumleft:

Good stuff! :thumleft:

Have you gone with a brand new box or refurbed?

If new, how much did MRT remove from your wallet?

It was a refurbed box, but inspected throughout and the final drive mod from the GT4 installed. Nathan is taking it on a road test tomorrow.

As for the clutch, i did have a Helix 4 puck, but have upgraded to a Helix 6 puck.
The last one lasted around 7 years, Fensport had it on record me buying it in 2003! Considering i have been running in excess of 350bhp for 3 of those years, done a couple of track days, a TOTB day and some Santa Pod runs i am very impressed.

Pics of the shot flywheel

Loose ring gear. Allen bolts have been drilled out here so we could remove it totally and inspect.

Stripped out internal teeth. These stop the ring gear from moving once pressed onto the flywheel and then secured with allen bolts.

This also explains the reason why once the flywheel was hot it stopped rattling. The aluminium expanded and 'locked' the ring gear down.

Does it stop when the engine has warmed up?
