GB: SW20 Front Anti Sway Bar Reinforcement Plates

Post by MRGEN3TURBO »

Greetings all,

As a continuation of a group buy currently running on various other European MR2 forums we extend an offer for purchase of SW20 front anti sway bar reinforcement plates. These are designed to strengthen the existing mounting points on the car as well as provide a third mounting point on each side courtesy of an existing bolt further forward.

A well known weakness on SW20 MR2’s are the front sway bar mounting points. Conventional front engine cars have a front sub frame from which the anti sway bars are mounted. As the MR2’s engine is mid mounted there is no front sub frame and the anti sway bars mount directly to the body. Under cornering forces the bolts can pull out of their mounts and require re welding of the body to correct. Fitting of more rigid aftermarket sway bars increases the risk of this occurring.

This picture depicts a 1990 model SW20 turbo with corrective welding of failed mounting points and also demonstrates where these plates attach to body (circled in red).

These plates are made in Australia. They have being redesigned from the original Suspension Techniques design sold by various US vendors. Ours are lighter whilst still retaining similar strength.

For comparison - weights (per pair),

ST: 1380g
Australian: 1080g

For the same function this is quite a significant weight saving I think you will agree.

Installation is straight forward and can be accomplished by the backyard mechanic providing you have suitable equipment to safely jack and secure the front of the car.

Two versions are available, mild steel with zinc plating to resist corrosion and stainless steel.

We only have limited pairs left:

Stainless Steel: 55 GBP per pair (1 pair left)
Zinc plated mild steel 35 GBP per pair (5 pairs left).

These are being distributed via Germany, postage from Germany to you with be an additional cost.

It can be very expensive to fix once they fail as well. I have one local customer who bought these as hair line cracks were forming around the mounting points on his car. Since fitting he has been driving for a while now including participating in a few hill climbs and the cracking has not progressed any further.

yeah mine on both sides were pushed right into the chassis, had to pull it all off, line up the holes again, tap them, weld the damaged area then make plates and do the same on them. good days work

I thought this was only a weakness on rev1 cars? Or am I wrong?

cheers

Yep, Rev 1 only AFAIK :thumleft:

By the way, how is payment to be carried out? Paypal?

Reason I ask, is you only have two posts on this forum, I want some kind of guarantee that you won't run off with my money.

Mounting points were altered in the late 92 revision; changes were a stud mounted into the body replacing one bolt each side.

Although certainly an improvement, cases of cracking still occur on revision 2 & 3 cars. Of course a lot more frequent here with relatively rough Australian and New Zealand roads. However if you do any moderate to serious track/race driving, I could not recommend these more highly.

As for security of the transaction, payment and postage of the plates to you will be handled by Phil Hahn, a well known member of the German MR2 community. Paypal is probably the best payment method and for peace of mind, they insure payments against fraudulent sellers (at least I know they do in oz). Of course you can use direct bank transfer if that is convenient. I can assure you your money will not go walkabout 8)

We still have 2 pairs left, if you are interested please let me know soon as possible.

Delivery update for Kerazee & Monkeyra: Plates are packed and I'll have them in the post in the next few days. Delivery via air mail to Germany, so I would expect 1 week max to arrive there. Phil should turn them around pretty quick so fingers crossed for roughly 2 weeks to your dirty little hands  Cheers guys.
